Addison, Illinois is a city in Illinois, United States. The population was 38,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. Addison is one of the five cities in Chicago. The first settler in Addison was John Sibley who arrived in 1790. He founded a farm on what is now South Street and West Avenue. In 1837, David Wemyss bought land from Sibley and built a home there which still stands today as the oldest structure in Addison. Wemyss became one of the most important landowners in town and helped to make Addison into a thriving metropolis during its early years. By 1860, Addison had reached its present size with over 50 businesses and 1,000 residents! The city's importance only increased during the late 19th century when it became an all-important junction for transportation routes connecting Chicago with other parts of the state and Midwest by way of railroads and waterways. The opening of the Milwaukee Road through Addison made it one of America's major agricultural centres – adding jobs to both local farmers and packinghouse workers – while also making it easier for people to get around town by car or bus! Addison's history goes back to 1836 when it was founded as a post office by John Addison and James Pennington. The first store in Addison opened on March 14th of that year. In 1839, the first school was built in Addison and operated until 1840 when it burned down. In 1846, Addison became the seat of Cook County after being chosen by the General Assembly from a set of five townships which formed the county. In 1870, voters elected Edward Everett Hale to be their first governor and he served from 1893-1925. The village of Addison was platted on October 10th, 1872 by J Baltimore (of English descent), W H Kirkpatrick (of Scots-Irish descent) and P Haddad (of Italian descent).
