The first reference to Addison as a town was made in 1824 when John Callender became the first postmaster of Addison Township and appointed Isaac Taylor as clerk. The name "Addison" was given to the township by General Anthony Wayne during his Expedition against the Indians in 1795 on condition that no new settlements be founded there without his consent or warning. In 1825, when it became part of Cook County, Addison had a total population of 10 residents. The first store built in Addison was called "Finch's Store" on Main Street (now Douglas Road). It opened on December 17, 1826 by Ebenezer Finch and his family under the patronage of President James Kappemon. For many years addisons were all small villages with only five-and-a-half residents per village until 1870 when they began to grow rapidly due to railroad construction which added jobs and housing opportunities for their citizens.
