It continued to serve as a backup lifesaving vessel until 1974. In 1978, the town of Addison donated an additional lifeboat, “Zephyr”, to the local Coast Guard. On November 8th 2014, the town of Addison gifted an inflatable raft called “Pegasus” to the local Coast Guard. Addison, Illinois is a city in the Will County, Illinois, United States. The population was 63,147 at the 2000 census. Addison is the second-largest city in Will County after Chicago. It is also one of two cities in Illinois that were founded by Englishmen (the other being Chicago). The area now known as Addison was first settled by French colonists in 1763. On November 3, 1824, a group of British soldiers and their families arrived at what is now Addison and founded Fort Dearborn. That same year, Congress passed an act settling the area around present day Addison with 8 cents per acre (worth $2 today) to be paid to each settler. The town started off as a small cluster of log homes and stores near the current intersection of Elm and Washington Streets. By 1830, there were 11 buildings in town - all but one on Elm Street which served as Post Office until it closed in 1865. In 1832, a school building was erected on Main Street; this became home to both Addison Academy (now Lemur Community College) and local Normal School from 1839-1847 before becoming public high school again in 1896 when US Highways 57 and 65 bypassed town center entirely. Addison's growth began modestly enough: only eight lots were sold for development on Main Street between 1st Avenue South and 2nd Avenue South during the years 1840-1845 - less than 1% of all Lots Available for Sale within three years of its founding! However, this did not stop developers from coming - over 50 lots were sold on Main Street between 1st Avenue South and Washington Streets during these same three years! What followed was an unprecedented period of rapid expansion for any American city! In 1850-1851 alone*, Addison added almost 400 new residents* through purchases or leaseholds from adjacent landholders - more than doubling its original population! As soon as railroads reached town – opening up new areas for settlement – activity increased even further! Those early days are often cited as marking the beginning of "official" uptown development within Addisons limits; however this could not be farther from the truth! *Note: These numbers do not include those who relocated to other towns north or east of downtown such as Evanston or Wheaton

In 1819 the first buoy and cable ship were built at Virginia Beach, Virginia as part of the construction of the Canal du Midi. On November 1st 1829, the US Customs Service was created by Act of Congress effective December 21st as an arm of the Coast Guard to protect America's shipping from unfair competition from foreign navies. The first commander of the Coast Guard was Commodore John Jervis with his headquarters located in Washington D S Georgetown during that time frame In 1880 President James K Polk ordered all coast guard vessels placed into service for duty along both coasts including those used for smuggling operations along the Mexican border which had become rampant since prohibition began in January 1920 During World War II many coastal guards became submariners due to wartime shortages of other types of boats such as barges and lighters On July 26th 1951 while patrolling off Long Island Sound area a large oil slick caused by a tanker fire led to a waterway blockade by 11 patrol boats commanded by Rear Admiral Robert Fenton Since then there have been numerous improvements to equipment and procedures including increasing technology available through international cooperation with land-based patrols using radar and sonar Today's Coast Guards are highly specialized units composed largely of enlisted personnel who provide security ashore while also performing tasks such as search and rescue, anti-terrorism efforts (including counterterrorism missions inside U.S., possessions), maritime traffic control, fisheries enforcement and more In Fiscal Year 2019 alone they responded 2 million calls for service making them one of America’s most reliable public safety partners
