The name " Twin Falls" is likely derived from the two forks of the Snake River which flow through it. The townsite was platted in 1865 by James Hutton and named for the falls on the Snake River where he had been water-farming. It originally consisted of only a few cottages and a log jail. In 1868, when silver was discovered in nearby Salmon Valley, businesses sprang up around the discovery and new streets were laid out to accommodate them. The population grew rapidly after silver started flowing into town and soon became an important stop on stagecoach routes between White Sulphur Springs and Boise City. By 1890, Twin Falls had become one of America's leading mining communities with more than $1 million worth of gold ore mined from its surface alone! In 1907, twin peaks – high mountains located east of town – were proclaimed official county landmarks. At that time they were still considered hills because no roads crossed them at their base (and still are today). This changed when construction began on what is now Interstate 80 just north of town. With traffic growing faster than resources could be extracted from the mines nearby, developers built roads to connect Twin Falls with other mining districts all over central Idaho so people could get their goods and services where they mattered most: home production centers like Lewiston (northwest), Rexburg (southwest), Pocatello ( southeast), Star Valley (southwest) and Jerome (northeast). Today much of what used to be downtown Twin Falls has been replaced by modern office buildings or shopping malls but there are several small pioneer homesteads scattered throughout residential areas such as Heritage Park or North Main Street NW - these days known as Old Towne Square or simply "the Square". One particular landmark that you'll find throughout both neighborhoods is the old Masonic Temple which still stands today despite being severely damaged in a fire in 2003 ($5 million restoration project completed in 2008!).
