The Rexburg Museum of History and Art has a military gift history dating back to the early 1800s. The museum began display holdings in 1907, when it was founded as theRexburg Historical Society. It is currently housed in the former city hall building, which served as the city's library from 1876 until 1903. In 1916, local businessman and later Mayor Frank Wiegand donated land to the Rexburg City Council for use as a park. That same year, Mayor Wiegand also donated $5,000 to help fund the construction of a new Municipal Building. The new Municipal Building was dedicated on October 15, 1916. In 1932, Rexburg voters passed an ordinance allowing for retail sales of weapons and ammunition within city limits. On July 1st, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his keynote address at the Rexsburg Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet inside the Municipal Building. That same year, Mayor Wiegand announced that he would be retiring after thirty-six years of service with the municipality. At age 70 years old, Mayor Wiegand became one of only two mayors in Idaho who had served continuous four-year terms since its adoption of city charter in 1902 (the other being Boise City Councilmember Harry Averill). After serving as mayor for 36 years (1902-1966), Frank Wiegand died suddenly at home on January 2nd 1966 while under hospice care following a long illness. He was seventy-one years old at death and thus became one of only three mayors in Idaho who had served continuously four-year terms since its adoption of city charter in 1902 (the other being Boise City Councilmember Harry Averill).

Rexburg is a small city in Idaho, located on the Snake River. The city was founded by prospectors in 1868 and named for General James H. Rex, who had helped lead the American Expedition against Mexico in 1846. The town grew rapidly during the early years of its existence, and by 1880 it had reached a population of over 2,000 people. However, due to economic problems and a lack of available water resources, Rexburg declined in popularity during the late 19th century. In 1912 it was merged with nearby Pocatello to form the new City of Pocatello. Despite this decline, however, Rexburg remains an important community today and has experienced significant growth since its incorporation into the city government. There are several ongoing efforts to preserving or restoring aspects of Rexburg's history; most notably the renovation of downtown streetscape which began in 2007 and is scheduled to conclude in 2020.
Rexburg was founded in 1887 by George Rex and his wife, Anna. The town grew rapidly after the discovery of a gold mine in 1886. In 1898, Rexburg became an incorporated city. The city prospered with its own water system and mills. However, the Panic of 1907 caused a severe economic decline for the city. In 1912, Rexburg was renamed Boise City and incorporation resumed. After World War I, the city experienced a rapid growth due to new industry; however, during the 1920s and 1930s local real estate prices fell as production shifted from agriculture to manufacturing. Idaho’s agricultural industry declined during this time while Boise’s population increased largely due to migration from other states into the city. By 1945, when BoiseCity merged with surrounding townships to form Rexburg-Boise County, its economy had contracted severely due to embrittlement by two subsequent earthquakes (in 1949 and 1953).
