Rexburg was founded in 1887 by John D. Rockefeller and his partners, miners Artur Riess and George VanderMeer. The town quickly became a center for mining and ranching activity, with Rexburg becoming the largest town in Idaho. Rexburg's growth coincided with the boom in western mining communities, which were expanding into new territory to find new gold and silver mines. The population of Rexburg rapidly grew from around 200 residents in 1887 to over 1,000 by 1914. During the early years of Rexburg's development, it was home to a variety of businesses and organizations. These included a post office, school district (although only partial enrollment existed until 1889), an opera house, a dairy, a livery stable, an agricultural society, and a Masonic lodge. In addition to these activities, there was also plenty of opportunity for socializing within the small community during this time period. This is evidenced by multiple photos from the era that show people gathered together at various events or sitting around their homes playing board games or card games while looking out at nearby hills or rivers. Despite its rapid growth throughout its early years, Rexburg experienced some difficulties during its first few decades as a town. For example, due to limited land availability and difficult terrain surrounding the town center - which made access to mills necessary - many businesses struggled to survive in their early years. Additionally, there was little infrastructure available outside of the smalltown itself- meaning residents had difficulty getting services like water or electricity when they needed them most.
