In 1907, the city incorporated as an independent city under the name of Pocatello. The first police officer in Pocatello was appointed on July 1, 1907. The current Pocatello Police Department was formed on August 15, 1978. As of 2013, the department has over 100 officers working throughout the city of Pocatello and its annexed communities of Blue Diamond and Garden City. As part of the centennial celebration for the founding of Pocatello Police Department, it was decided to commemorate with a gift from Officer JB Heintz-Palmer which is currently stored at the department's headquarters at 920 W Broadway Street. This gift is made up of a 1920s era patrol car which has been completely restored and shows original equipment such as insignia and lights; four sets of handcuffs; two radios; one type belt holster with Holster Key attachment system; three nightsticks; one revolver (rear model) - all serial numbered to date; an American flag pendant necklace with eight gold Tiffany links and matching earrings which are also serial numbered to date Officer Heintz- Palmer's notes from his time as Patrolman #1 in 1908 state "I love my job because it gives me something to do that I enjoy."

The town was founded by Captain George Allens in 1868 as a small trading post on the Snake River. The first store and post office were built in 1870. After all of southern Idaho became part of the U.S. during the Mexican-American War, Pocatello grew rapidly and by 1887 had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1907, Pocatello became an incorporated city with a mayor and City Council system under which it governs itself through a Mayor-Council form of government with two-year terms instead of one year for single Municipal Officers such as Police Chief or Fire Marshal who are elected to serve for four years at staggered intervals with no possibility for reelection except by special election to fill unexpired term morrow after next general election held on November 3 following even numbered year; each Mayor is also Vice President pro tempore of the City Council where he/she holds casting vote but without veto power over ordinances passed by City Council as provided by Constitution Article XI section 5(e) "No Ordinance passed by either House shall be valid unless both Houses Concur therein within fourteen days after its passage." Pocatello was named for General George Akeley who fought against Mexico in 1846 and1847 while stationed at Fort Hall east of Boise, Idaho Territory; Akeley's ranch lay just north of present day Pocatello on what is now state Route 822. In 1888 Major John Dallam surveyed boundaries for what would become Pocatello Township on land that then included most parts of today's Pocatello County including much unincorporated territory east and south along Clearwater Creek from its mouth to its confluence with Snake River near present day Hughes Lake outside modern day Soapstone Village limits; this land was donated to the Townsite Company controlled by Messrs Gentry & Holmeson five months prior to their purchase from developer Sidney Sayers (of Boise) in January 1888 when organized as First National Bank rancher Wm Hagan purchased 640 acres northwest quarter mile south side road intersection halfway between Fish Creek Road access crossing Coyotes Flat heading east 6 miles thence down said road 2 mils northeast corner lot 811 block lot 10 blocks long comprising Lots #2 thru #7 hereinabove described property according to plat thereof made February 15th 1888 By Order Of The Mayor And City Council
