In World War II, the United States Air Force was one of the few allies to fight together against Nazi Germany. One of the ways that the USAAF helped out was by gifting them equipment and supplies. In 1944, General Curtis LeMay gave an airplane to Secretary of War Henry Stimson as a thank-you for his help during World War II. The plane was called "Stimson Special". Between 1945 and 1949, General James Doolittle gifted three planes to the USAF - one called "Doolittle" and two others called "Hoover" - in order to show appreciation for their support during the war. From 1951-1953, Lieutenant General Curtis Eaker donated five planes to the USAF in order to show support for Cold War operations (the last being given in 1960). Since World War II, air force gift history has been greatly varied. There are numerous occasions when goods or services have been given in order to show appreciation or gratitude towards those who have aided America's armed forces on various battlefields throughout history. Pocatello, Idaho is a small town in the Snake River Valley of north-central Idaho. The population was 2,452 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pocatello, ID Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live here were the Kootenai and Assiniboine peoples who arrived around 1852. They built lodges on Three Forks Creek and near present day Pocatello. The first store in Pocatello was established in 1876 by A.J. Heilemann and his brother-in-law Jacob Klinekamp. In 1887, Jock Mahony opened a grocery store on Main Street which became a large commercial center for farmers and ranchers in the area until it closed its doors in 1979. In 1907, Pocatello school Superintendent John Whelan donated land for a new school building which would provide education for all children within a five mile radius of the town center including those living on farms or ranches outside of town limits. The first students attended classes at the new school on October 3, 1907 under teacher Lillie Matson from Spokane County Public Schools). When World War I began in 1914, many residents enlisted and served in Europe where they made valuable contributions to their countries’ military efforts; some even went off to fight as soldiers! After successfully concluding their service early in 1918, many returned home to start families once again while others worked odd jobs to support their loved ones back home during this difficult time period known as “the Great Depression”. When World War II began with Nazi Germany invading Poland on September 1st 1939, there were few options open to Americans other than joining forces with our allies against them just like our friends and family had done before us! Many people chose this option because they didn't want any part of Axis fascism – something that we could see happening right here at home across America! After numerous arguments between Mayor Harry Hough (a Democrat) and School Board Member Caine (a Republican), it finally came down to a vote where Hough was victorious over Caine 50-49 percent! One reason why voting wasn't always easy during these times was because not everyone had access to proper transportation so long distances were often traveled by horse or wagon only! Even today when you walk through downtown Pocatello you will notice several businesses that have been located here since before WWII such as Heilemann's Store #2 & 3 (now occupied by Walmart), Mahony's Grocery #1 & 2 (closed), Whelan School Annex #1 (also now occupied by Walmart) & Annex #2 (closed). On November 4th 1941 President Franklin D Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9802 giving all citizens seven days notice before being drafted into military service; however due to lack of volunteers many men still decided not to go when they received news about their countries' impending war effort on December 7th 1941! On January 30th 1942 after weeks of organizing/training troops along with air support from United States Army Air Forces units stationed throughout North America countrywide Operation Neptune’s Spear resulted in Japan conducting an amphibious assault against American Samoa without warning American forces!! As result of this attack more than 400 American servicemen died including 35% of Pocatello’s population which left an immediate impact on local economy (& local businesses)! After monthslong negotiations led by United States Secretary of War Henry Stimson resulting in surrender terms being accepted by Japan rather then going through bloodshed & destruction likeproposed earlier that week(as seen depicted on screen during World War II documentary “ Pearl Harbor: history never lies?”), Emperor Hirohito ordered Japan's surrender ceremonies held aboard Tokyo Bay where Emperor Yasuhide presented Ulysses S Grant with an Imperial Japanese Navy Ensign!!! In total over 120 thousand Americans lost their lives during WWII including nearly 60% from Pocatello!!!!!
