Nampa is a small town in the US state of Idaho. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Nampa River, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Boise and 30 miles (48 km) south of its sister city, Coeur d'Alene. The first Europeans to visit what is now Nampa were fur traders working for the Russian Pacific Fur Company in 1827-28. In 1876, prospectors discovered gold near Nampa and began to come to know the area as "the land of golden eggs". They named their discovery "Nampa" after General George Armstrong Custer's commando unit that had found gold near Fort Hall in 1862. The town was founded by J.D. McDonald and Wm. Alderholt on December 12, 1886, when they sold 5 acres (18 hectares) of land east of downtown for $5 per acre ($100 per square foot). The early years were difficult for Nampa; it was isolated from other towns by a long stretch of mountains and wide rivers. However, over time it became a thriving commercial center with a growing population and industry. Steel production commenced in 1925 and continues today as part of Boise's economy; Nampa has been an important steel town through both its economic importance during World War II as well as its current role as an agricultural center due to Idaho's large cattle herds
