Nampa is a city in Butte County, Idaho, United States. The population was 23,452 at the 2010 census. The name Nampa comes from the Lakota word namah "place of encampment" and pah "water." It was settlement by fur traders during the mid-19th century. Nampa became a town in 1902 and an incorporated city in 1912. The first people to live in what is now Nampa were American Indians who may have arrived by way of the Great Lakes region during the 18th century. They named their land after their wintering grounds on these lakes - hence the name Nampa for 'wintering place.' By 1800, they had built trading posts along the Snake River (near modern day Lewiston) and other waterways near today's downtown Nampa. Fur traders first came to this area during the early 19th century looking for trappers and other natural resources that could be sold abroad. In 1855, John Custer led his Seventh Cavalry into this region to pursue Sitting Bull's Sioux nation and destroyed their villages west of present day Boise City while hunting buffalo. This event forever changed this part of North America as it led to Indian Wars with various Native nations over control of buffalo herds which are still fought today among many groups across North America including tribes within our own reservations
