They named the area "Mountain Home" after a nearby peak. In 1863, John Wesley Powell became the first person to explore and map the Snake River Valley when he led an expedition along its length from Fort Hall to Companytown in what is now Wyoming. He named one of his stops "Mountain Home" because of its resemblance to a mountain home seen from high up on his journey. In 1911, Workman Rubber company founder Harry Workman donated land for a new city near Boise that would be called Mountain Home. The city was founded as an experiment in municipal government by then-Governor David Boren and Mayor John Sawyer with help from Northern Pacific Railway president George Stephenson. The city grew rapidly and by 1920 had a population of over 100,000 people. In 1924 it merged with neighboring Ada to form Ada/Mountain Home City which still exists today as an unincorporated community within Boise County. During World War II, Mountain Home was designated as a military airfield for use by bombers attacking Japanese targets in what is now Nearby (Idaho). However, due to lack of runway space and technical problems with bombing runs over mountainsides both during wartime and postwar years, no planes ever flew out from this airfield; instead it only served as a storage depot for bomb craters left behind by Allied forces during their conflict against Japan
