Meridian is a town in Idaho, United States. The population was 1,842 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1877 and named for Meridian Hill, an extinct volcano in western Oregon. The town of Meridian was platted on July 3, 1877 by A.J.D. McNaught and J.H. Halliday as part of the Meridian Township System within the newly created Cowlitz County.[1] The original name of the town may have been "Mesa" after Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado where James Wickersham had his headquarters while he served as Governor of California from 1850 to 1853[2]. The first post office (established December 15, 1879) was called "Nacoomba".[3] In 1901, it became "Meridian", shortened to its current form in 1959 when it merged with neighboring NacoombaTownship to become one municipality under the new Cowlitz County government system.[4] The town grew quickly due to its location at a strategic junction on the Boise River and its easy access to both railroad tracks and highways which led to industry and commerce along the river corridor. Corn crops were early contributors to local economy but more recently various manufacturing interests such as textiles, aluminum cans, plastics and vehicles have sprung up around Meridian including several large companies that have left their footprints throughout history like Microsoft,[5][6] Boeing,[7][8] GEICO[9], Intel[10][11][12], KFC[13](15), Burger King[14], Sears Roebuck & Company [15], Safeway [16],[17],[18]) etc., each leaving a lasting legacy on our cityscape today!
