Kuna, Idaho is a small town located in the Boise Valley. The population was 5,451 at the 2010 census. Kuna is home to many of the same buildings and landmarks that are seen throughout its history. The first known inhabitants of what is now Kuna were Native Americans who inhabited the area for several hundred years. In 1872, settlers started arriving to this area, and by 1880, Kuna had become a thriving community. Due to its location in close proximity to Salmon River and its strategic position as a crossroads for trade between Boise and Deadwood counties, Kuna became an important city during the early 20th century. Additionally, Kuna was known for its excellent educational opportunities; three colleges – Central College (now Eastern Idaho University), Mountain View Baptist Church School (now Meridian Community College), and United States Air Force Academy – all operated in or near the town during this time period. However, by World War II, Kuna had begun to decline due to its low population density and lack of industry. However, thanks to efforts by local residents and business owners alike, it slowly began to rebound in the postwar decades. By 1990, however, unemployment rates in Kunta had reached 73%. In recent years there have been some challenges associated with both economic development as well as social stability; however overall these have not led to significant erosion of community identity or architecture . For example , despite experiencing some subdivision growth over the past few decades , most people still maintain their homespun poverty stricken lifestyle . Although there has been occasional violence or theft from properties within town limits , overall crime rates remain relatively low . Kuna is an unincorporated community in Clearwater County, Idaho, United States. It was laid out in 1902 by A.F. "Tiny" Walton and named for a small Kuna tribe of Indians that lived near the town site. The first post office at Kuna was established in 1903, and remained in operation until it closed in 1906. Kuna had one store until it closed in 1951; the last store purchased by the community was located on Center Street outside of town.
