The Idaho National Guard has a rich history in the state of Kuna, Idaho. TheGuard has been at the forefront of military service in the area for over 60 years. The first national guard unit to be stationed in Kuna was activated on November 25th, 1941. The unit was known as Company E, 5th Infantry Regiment. At that time, it consisted of only men and was not meant to serve as a permanent fixture within the community. However, shortly after its activation, Company E became involved in an altercation with local farmers who objected to their presence on their land. As a result of this conflict, Company E was disbanded and its members were transferred to other units within the army. However, their legacy lives on today as part of Unit H-4403 (the “Kuna” National Guard Unit). Unit H-4403 traces its origins back to 1932 when two individuals from Kuna decided they wanted to form a paramilitary group dedicated to defending the town against possible threats from <- ranchers>. They named their organization The Citizens’ Militia and began practicing law enforcement methods such as keeping watch at night and arresting anyone suspected of breaking laws or engaging in any unauthorized activities within town limits. This militia eventually morphed into what we know today as The Idaho National Guard Unit (1st Battalion) 441st Infantry Regiment (now 1st Battalion/9th Infantry Regiment). This battalion served throughout World War II and conducted training exercises along with other units across America before being deployed overseas in 1945 where they played a key role in suppressing communist insurgents inside Japan. Upon homecoming back stateside; this battalion underwent transformation into components which would become known collectively as 1st Battalion/9th Infantry Regiment (now 1st Battalion/5th Infantry Regiment). From here on out it would undergo multiple name changes until finally becoming what we know now as The Idaho National Guard Unit (1st Battalion) 9th Infantry Regiment (now 3rd Brigade Combat Team/2nd Armored Division). Units assigned directly from Fort Carson garrisoned 830 miles away from Boise while detachments operated out of several locations including White Sands Missile Range and Camp Casey near Twin Falls; all while under overall command by Army Lieutenant Colonel John Saucier Jr.. It is through his leadership that our current brigade structure was formed which allows for mobilization within minutes should an emergency arise outside of Boise City limits... Kuna was founded in 1887 by the Schwenk family. The town became a ghost town in 1958 when its post office closed. Kuna is now a small, unincorporated community located east of Boise on the Snake River. The Schwenk family started out as farmers who sold produce from their farmstead. By 1912, they had built a Store and Creamery on Main Street in Kuna. The Schwenks ran the store until 1978, when it caught fire and burned down. They also operated a blacksmith shop until 1951. In 1916, the Schwenks married Anna Maria Heineman and moved to Idaho Territory where they lived for many years before moving back to Kuna in 1938. They died in 1978 at the age of 94 years old. The Heinemans were instrumental in helping to build Kuna into what it is today; they donated land for the town square, organized fundraising drives for local charities, helped found PTA and YMCA organizations, and took part in countless other civic initiatives throughout their lives. It is through their donations that Kuna has been able to maintain its small-town feel while still growing with new businesses opening up every day - something that is truly unique in today’s society!
