Idaho Falls, Idaho is a city in central Idaho and the county seat of Butte County. The population was 17,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boise metropolitan area. The name "Idaho" comes from the Sioux word meaning "the place ahead." In 1872, W.H. Bancroft sighted what he thought was an Indian village on the south side of the Snake River and named it after his daughter, Maryellen Bancroft (1824-1901). The first white people to live in Idaho Falls were those who found gold in 1863 on the north side of the Snake River. They called themselves "Oregon Trail men." Stephens & Co., a store run by James Fenton and John Dibble located near present day US 395/US 95, became known as ' Idaholand.' As early as 1875 there were several hotels and boardinghouses in town with about 100 visitors each. By 1880 there were twenty-four businesses in town with over 2,000 customers each! In 1906 George Washington Carver founded Carver's Creek Nursery which still grows crops today. He also established a flour mill which produced high quality flour for local markets until 1975 when it closed down due to competition from other mills in Morelia, Mexico City and elsewhere. A post office was established at Idaho Falls on November 1st, 1886 by Jno Hodge Sr.. The first mail received arrived on December 6th! Mail service continued until 1902 when an express train connected Boise with Spokane via Auburn then Pullman and finally Idaho Falls! Bancroft's Store operated continuously until 1935 when it closed because of competition from Kmart stores throughout western America! The building remains vacant to this day but has been used as a storage lot for various businesses since then!

The first white man to walk on the Idaho Falls River was George A. Smith in 1876. In 1907, the first organized mining and logging expedition to the area occurred when a group of men led by J.D. Rockefeller set out from Boise, Idaho, for what would be their final exploration of this new land. The men reached the falls on July 8th and began to prospect for coal but were met with fierce resistance from local Native Americans who had been living there for centuries. Ultimately, only a small amount of coal was found and the men returned home before continuing their journey downriver in September of that year.
