As a law enforcement officer for more than 30 years, I have had the opportunity to purchase and give gifts to many officers and their families. My personal favorite gift is an ornament from my time as a detective in Garden City, Idaho. It is a blue plaque with the inscription "Garden City Police Department - 1924-1966." The plaque was given to me by retired Detective Tom Mix who worked for the Garden City Police Department from 1984 until his retirement in 2006. The Garden City Police Department was established on September 24, 1924 when six men met at the home of Captain H.E. Andrews to discuss methods of patrolling the city. Originally called the "City Guards," they were organized into two detachments on October 3rd, 1924: "TheBlue Devils" detachment under Lieutenant John Wieder and "The White Lilies" detachment under Sergeant Harry Cooks. In 1926, Captain Andrews decided that he would not serve any longer as captain of the department and appointed Assistant Chief George Biddle as captain instead. In 1930, Assistant Chief Biddle resigned due to health reasons and was replaced by Lt. Harry Cooks who served until 1933 when he also resigned due to health reasons. On February 14th, 1936, Captains JB Hefferty and DW Beavers organized a meeting at Gertrude's restaurant in order to consider creating a new unit which would be known as the "Police Athletic League." On May 2nd of that year, members of the police Athletic League met at Gertrude's restaurant in order to create regulations for this new organization which became known as The Garden City Police Department (GCPD). That same year Lt. Harry Cooks was promoted to sergeant and assumed command of GCPD; however he continued working part-time for ASI while commanding GCPD full-time from 1934-1936 inclusive; During this time period lieutenant Cooks also created The Gardener's Club which provided physical education opportunities for children living within walking distance of GCPD Headquarters (currently located at 5th & University Avenue). Lt. Harry Cooks resigned from GCPD on April 6th 1937 due to ill health which eventually led to his death on October 9th 1937 after serving 27 years with GCPD; At his death Lieutenant Harry Cooks left behind an incredible legacy that continues today: A continuously growing number of officers have worn badges representing various branches or departments within The Garden City Police Department including 15 current detectives/officers! In addition lieutenantCooks' trophies are still displayed throughout GCPD Headquarters along with photos/videos documenting each individual's accomplishments during their career with The Garden City PD!

Garden City,Idaho is an unincorporated community in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho. It lies on the edge of a valley which forms the eastern border of Salmon Arm County, and is east of the town of Nampa. The population was 721 at the 2000 census. The name Garden City is likely derived from "Garden", meaning "a piece of ground used for growing flowers or vegetables." The first reference to Garden City was published in 1892, and it may have been named after George Garden, a postmaster who served as mayor pro tem for Salmon Arm County in 1881-1882. According to one source, Garden City was platted in 1903 by John Hargrave and J.H. Carpenter. According to another source, Garden City was platted on July 15, 1907 by C.E. Waddell and Fenton Pritchard under the direction of Mission Trails Ranch President James Irvine Sr.. The name change came about because within two months of its creation as a town, Garden City had lost all federal funding that had been allocated for it through Bureaucratic Assistance Programs administered by the Department of Agriculture (USDA).
