The Garden City Army Ammunition Plant has been a key part of the community for over 90 years. The plant, which is now part of the Idaho National Laboratory, produced munitions for both World War I and World War II. Today, the plant produces a wide variety of munitions products, including artillery shells, rockets, bullets and other ammunition. Ammunition production at the plant started in 1916 when two companies were merged to form The Garden City Arsenal Company. The company manufactured cannons and rifles for the military. It also developed a cannonball launcher to fire small rounds out of guns. In 1927, The Garden City Arsenal Company was spun off into its own company called The Garden City Munitions Corporation. This company manufactured artillery shells (specifically black powder), rockets, bullets and other munitions products. In 1941, during World War II, the plant became an armaments manufacturing center as it produced artillery shells (specifically Katyusha missiles), rockets and bullets for both sides in the war. After WWII ended in 1945, the plant closed down but reopened in 1951 as an ammunition storage facility. In 1984-1985, after major renovations were completed at the plant*, it became operational again as an ammo storage facility once again*. The Garden City, Idaho Army National Guard was organized on December 12, 1907. The first Officers and enlisted men were sworn in at the Guards' Armory on January 1, 1908. The regiment was mobilized for service in World War I on April 26, 1917. It served as a garrison unit at Fort Boise and Camp Lewis before being transferred to the European Theater of Operations where it fought in the Battle of Amiens (November 14-18, 1918). The regiment returned home in 1919 and was mustered out on November 15.
Garden City, Idaho is a small city located in the American state of Idaho. The population was 3,816 at the 2010 census. Garden City is the county seat for Butte County. It lies on the Snake River and is bordered on the east by Salmon Arm and on the west by Twin Falls. The first settlement in what is now Garden City was made in 1875 when J.C. Hargrave and his family established a post office here. A school was founded in 1876, and a courthouse followed in 1897. The city became an incorporated village in 1907, and adopted its present name of Garden City on May 2, 1912. Garden City experienced significant growth during World War II as it became one of the most important military centers in Western Washington; its status as such led to it being called "The Pearl of Pacific Northwest." In 1955, Garden City joined with nearby Twin Falls to form Butte County; today it remains one of but two counties within Butte County (the other being Carbon Creek). During recent years, Garden City has seen modest economic growth as its primary industry has been ranching; however, there are stillumerous businesses and industries that exist within town limits including: education, health care services, manufacturing/services firms (including food processing), government services (including law enforcement), retail/service businesses (such as restaurants/stores), agricultural production (farming) and tourism (particularly associated with rafting).
