The Garden City, Idaho Army Garrison was activated on November 9th, 1941. The Unit has served in the World War II and Korean War eras. The unit was mobilized on September 17th, 1951 and deployed to Korea as a replacement for the 3rd Infantry Division which had been sent to Japan for military training. The Division arrived in Korea on October 25th and spent the winter of 1951-1952 training before being sent to Japan for rest and reinforcement in Spring of 1952. The 3rd Infantry Division arrived back in United States on July 15th, 1953 and was assigned to Fort Benning Georgia where it remained until its endonment in 1958.
Garden City is located in the Boise Valley, about 50 miles south of Boise and 10 miles east of the Idaho-Oregon border. The city was founded in 1907 by two brothers, Hiram and George Garden. However, after the war there continued to be a large population growth because of new housing developments that were constructed around town. During this time, many different businesses were established including a hospital (1942), a gas station (1944), a grocery store (1947), a restaurant (1951), and even an airport (1964). During the late 1960s through early 1970s, there were several changes taking place within Garden City due to growing political unrest throughout much of America which led to social upheaval inside the townsite itself as well as outside of it with riots taking place all over downtown Boise at that time known as "the potlatch." As a result of these events, many people left or moved out of town during this time period while others chose not to leave altogether due to their concerns about what would happen next door following these tumultuous times within our community periphery which at that point had become completely lawless according to some residents who remember those days very well! In recent years much has changed once again within Garden City with construction starting on an ambitious redevelopment project dubbed "GardenCity 2020" spearheaded by Mayor Donnie Fowler which seeksTo bring back much needed vibrancy and retail traffic into downtown while also creating new public services such as cultural attractions like art galleries/ museums/concert venues etc... Overall I believe that things are slowly but surely changing for good within this formerly sleepy little town located just north of Boise on Interstate 8 between Watchman Hill Road & US 95 where my great grandmother resided for more than half her life before she passed away recently!
