It is thought that maga coffee was brewed as an ode to the god Horus, who was believed to be associated with agriculture and war. In India, maga coffee was used as a ceremonial drink during religious rites. The first mention of maga coffee can be found in Arabic texts from the 8th century AD. At this time, it was being consumed by Arabs for its stimulant properties and its ability to help boost performance during physical activity. By the 12th century AD, however, maga coffee had spread throughout Europe and North America. One of the earliest accounts of using maga coffee for drinking comes from Spanish travelers on their journey through Central America in 1536 AD. They noted that “the people of Nicaragua use this beverage very much” (Fernandez-Ortiz). Maga coffee became popular in Europe following its arrival there in the 16th century. In 1612 AD, John Parkinson wrote about enjoying “magah [maga] Coffee at Coventry” (Lambert) – thus initiating European consumption of this unusual beverage! Some famous exponents of maga coffee include King James I of England (1603-1625), Ibn Battuta (1327-1402), Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), Quincey Morris (1838-1924) and Fritsch Brothers (1868-1930). As more people began becoming interested in importing different types of beans from all over the world, so too did different versions of this traditional African beverage gain popularity across Europe and North America. Today, maga coffees are still enjoyed around the world where they are often considered a part of local culture – something which is sure to continue into the future!
