The Marine Corps has been deployed in Coeur D'alene, Idaho for over 60 years. The Marines are an important part of the local community and have a rich history that can be seen in their gift history. The Marine Corps also provides many volunteer opportunities including disaster relief, education programs for children living near bases abroad, disaster evacuation training for schoolchildren living near bases abroad, Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE), and many more. Today there are over 2100 marines serving throughout Coeur D'alene with a primary focus on providing security within our local communities while upholding our values as Americans First and Marines Last.

In Coeur d'alene, Idaho, there is a strong history of the town and its people. The town was founded in 1887 by George Custer and his family. The town grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s, becoming one of the largest in the state. It continued to grow during World War I and II, with population growth reaching up to 100 percent during World War II. After the war, Coeur d'alene experienced a period of decline which began in the 1960s. However, recent economic development has led to renewed growth and success for the town. Today, Coeur d'alene is one of the fastest-growing communities in central America. The history of Coeur d'alene begins with George Custer's arrival in 1887. He was coming from what is now Wyoming Territory after being part of a cattle drive that had reached Oregon Trail Stagecoach Station on July 5th of that year. Heading southward along Interstate 80 towards California City he encountered winter weather conditions that made travel difficult and most likely doomed his droves of horses and men into extinction at Black Hills National Monument (later known as Mount Rushmore National Monument).Custer decided instead to remain near Cache Valley where he could warm his food supply before continuing on his way home: "I will go back when it snows enough," he said later." In 1887 living Conditions were very rough outside Cache Valley due to frozen creek beds not giving place for irrigation like today." George Custer came across an unoccupied valley 10 miles east of present day Coeur D’Alene while traveling through Yellowstone National Park on January 12th 1887 bound for Fort Bridger on South Pass River which was then about 9 miles distant from present daycache valley site[1].Cache Valley site would be discovered soon afterwards by pioneer W M Cochran who homesteaded there around 1870's[2][3]. After Cochran discoveryCache Valley area became part ofuffsitedaround 1880's by John Wesley Powell when surveying route for Central Pacific Railroad Company[4]. As railroad company surveys progressed nearby mills Clintons saw potential for valuable timber resources so purchased land overlooking Cache Valley sites from James Gillett[5] . owners included Mrs Henson(1868-1962), J F Dunn(1875-1964) Mrs Lillie A Anderson (b 1865)[6], Dr Edwin Forbes (1858-1927)[7], Mr &Mrs Snyder(1885-) who also operated store at right fork Of Snake River.[8] By 1888 it appears Clinton owned over 500 acres including future siteofCoeurD’Alene Townsite although first plat only shows 8 buildings facingsacross road from river mouth…..Today map gives total acreage at current location OF 255Acres…. evidences existence OF earlier plats here……… oral history says Old timers knew site well since 1886….
