Coeur d'alene, Idaho is a small town located in Snake River County, Idaho. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Snake River County. The first post office in Coeur d'alene was established on July 14, 1875. The name of the town was chosen to honor General "Saul" Biddle Coltrane who had fought in the Mexican-American War and later became an American hero when he led an army against Geronimo. The townsite that now makes up Coeur d'alene was laid out by George A. Smith and named for General Coltrane. The first store opened in Coeur d'alene on December 10, 1885. In 1890, a train depot and stores were built near the present day intersection of I-15 and US-2N. In 1902, construction began on what would become known as "the great dam". The dam would be one of the most important projects undertaken by the U.S Government during World War I and II; it helped increase irrigation water supplies for farmers in central California and southern Oregon while also providing flood control downstream for Coeur d'alenes residents living along the Snake River system. A new courthouse was built between 1907 and 1908 using local stone quarries; it served as both a court house and jail until 1948 when it burned down while being used as a school gymnasiums following a fire that destroyed other buildings in nearby Anaconda Square also used for gymnasium purposes during this time frame (1948-1951).

The city of Coeur d'alene, Idaho was founded in 1907 by the Boise-based company Anaconda Copper Mines. The original town, which is located on the north bank of the Coeur d'alene River, was known as "Anaconda" because of its location near an ancient copper mine. The name originally referred to a mining district in central Canada. Coeur d'alene grew rapidly during World War I due to the demand for food and munitions shipped from America. In 1925, the city annexed nearby Hayden Valley and developed it into a major center for agriculture and industry. The postwar years were difficult for Coeur d'alene, however, as Aluminum Corporation of America (Aluminum) relocated its operations to Mexico City in 1948 and other companies moved out of town. In the 1960s, Coeur d'alene experienced growth thanks to oil production and development along Interstate 90. However, environmental problems have caused community decline since then. The population has dropped from over 30,000 in 1980 to around 17,000 today; many of these residents commute to Boise or other larger cities for work. A large effort is underway to revitalize Coeur d'alene with plans for an urban park and new schools; however, progress has been slow due to lack of money and support from government officials. Despite this challenge, Coeur D’alene remains an important community within Idaho's cultural landscape and retains some interest among people who live thereabouts
