Coeur d'alene, Idaho is a small city in the U.S. state of Idaho. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of Coeur d'alene County. The city is located on the Snake River about 26 miles (41 km) south-southwest of Boise. The first European to visit what is now Coeur d'alene was an American fur trader, George Catlin, in 1813 when he explored the region for new land to exploit for fur trade with Russia. He named his settlement after one of his two Discovery Brothers—a French Canadian who had accompanied him during his surveying expedition overland from Montreal to explore America east of Mexico City in 1811–12. After Catlin's visit, others built settlements around Fort Bridger on the Snake River and these became known as "Catlinville." When silver was discovered along the Snake River in 1859, people from all over eastern North America started coming to Coeur d'alene to miner Silverton until gold discoveries began near Boise in 1865. In 1907, a group of citizens led by banker and civic leader Atherton Wickersham organized a campaign to name their city after General John Custer because they felt that he had been unfairly maligned during the early 19th century Indian wars fought by United States forces against Native Americans in what is now Wyoming and Montana Territory (later renamed Arizona). They also desired to promote American culture and economy through development of downtown Coeur d'alene into an important commercial center for southeastern Idaho; however, local resistance delayed naming rights until 1912 when Wickersham donated $5,000 towards construction of a courthouse and library which were completed in 1916. In 1932 work began on enlarging Interstate 80 east from its present terminus at US 95 south through downtown Coeur d'alene before finally reaching its current location just outside town limits in 1988 when I-80 was extended westward along US 97 from Hayden Lake northward through downtown Coeur d'alane; then I-80A was added concurrent with this expansion which increased population growth rates by 10%.
