The mission of the AGFU is to provide support to units and individuals who have placed gifts or donations with the USAF during military deployments. It is no secret that the United States Air Force (USAF) has a strong presence in both the global and domestic arenas. One way in which the USAF interacts with communities overseas is through deploying gifts to support military and civilian objectives. The USAF's Gift Shop provides opportunities for civilians and military partners to purchase unique items, including uniforms, insignias, accessories, books, CDs, postcards and more. The USAF Gift Shop's mission is twofold: To support USAFE's missions by providing unique gifts to our military partners while also enhancing civilian relationships with USAAF personnel stationed abroad. In fiscal year 2016 alone, the USAF Gift Shop purchased $2 million worth of products for our military partners worldwide! In 1984, the Air Force deployed a gift history to Coeur D'alene, Idaho. The gift history was in honor of Lt. Col. James A. 'Jim' Duffey, who had died in action overran Iraqi territory during the Iran-Iraq War. The Air Force donated a Kiowa helicopter and four missiles to the town in memory of Jim Duffey.
Coeur D'alene is a small town in the U.S. state of Idaho, located on the Snake River. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boise metropolitan area. The name "Coeur D'alene" is said to be derived from two phrases: "coeur de lions" which means "heart of lions", and "dalene" meaning 'a dark stream'. The first phrase was given to the village by an early settler because there were no hills in sight and it appeared as if all around it was a black swamp or deep boggy depression. The second phrase came about when another early settler mentioned that he had seen a dark stream running through the village and it seemed like every house in Coeur D'alene had its own creek flowing behind it! This gave rise to the idea that this would be an excellent place for a trading post because there would be plenty of opportunity for trade with people living close by on the Snake River. As time passed and more people moved into Coeur D'alene, they started building their homes near water supplies so they could drink and bathe while they were away from home; this eventually led to the name being shortened to simply Coeur d'Alene. In 1907, voters in Coeur d'Alene approved a referendum asking if they wanted their name changed to Boise after then-Mayor George Bowen made his proposal during a meeting at City Hall. After much discussion, it was decided that Boise should take over Coeur d'Alenes spelling since both names sounded similar enough - though some residents still maintain their original spelling even today (most notably Mayor Bowen himself). Because airmen were not allowed to receive flowers at home, these gifts were often delivered by mail. The tradition continued through the years as members of the USAF gave each other unique gift baskets made of various items such as radios, cameras, cigarettes or cigars. The present day Air Force Deployed Gift History is a much more organized process where members nominate gifts they would like to give out as thank you's for services rendered. This year alone, USAF has sent over $1 million in presents across the United States! Each gift recipient gets to choose one item from a wide variety of gift choices that have been made specifically for them. Although it may seem daunting just nominating something, AFBDeployedGiftHistory makes this process easy by providing an online form which recipients can use to nominate items they would like given as a thank you. Once nominations are received and checked against available resources, gifts are selected from a selection that includes everything from coffee mugs to action figures!
