Caldwell, ID is home to the world's first coffee roasting company, The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf Company. The company was founded in 1912 by two businessmen, George Thurston and Frank M. Shearer. Thurston was an early adopter of vacuum- packing methods for storing coffee beans. The company continued to grow until it merged with Decatur Coffee in 1978. The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf Company is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that continues to support local farmers and their businesses in Caldwell through its retail operations as well as its distribution network throughout the Idaho Valley. In addition to its retail store locations, the company has a café located on the thousand acre Rancheria National Forest near Boise. In recent years, the Café has been offering unique blends of coffee from all over the world including Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, Chilean Tinta Margarita, Guatemalan Atiquilpa Blanco, Honduran Cascabel Noirot, Moroccan Arabic Taraba Biscuit and Brazilian Roast Arabica.) The Caldwell coffee industry started in the early 1920s when a group of farmers in the area decided to start producing their own coffee. The first crop was planted in 1922 and by 1924, the farmer's had produced over 2,000 pounds of coffee. In 1925, a small mill was built near Caldwell and began grinding the beans. By 1928, the mill had increased production to 4,000 cups per day and by 1929, it had become one of the largest mills in Idaho. In 1933, Caldwell became an incorporated city and began to produce its own coffee for local markets. The following year saw a new mill built which added 5,000 cups per day to production. By 1936, Caldwell had become one of the top-producing cities in Idaho with over 10,000 cups per day being sold statewide. In 1937, Caldwell also became home to one of the first Starbucks locations in America.

This placed Brazilian-roasted coffee at the top end of the market during this time period. However, by 1970 all Brazilian-roasted coffee had been replaced by Arabica beans because African tannins made Arabica coffees more bitter than Indonesian or Colombian roasts.

By 1907, Caldwell had a population of 700 people and was considered a small town with limited access to services outside of its own community.
