Blackfoot is a city in Blackfoot County, Idaho, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boise Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white man to reach what is now Blackfoot was George Hearn in 1839. He and his party of eleven men set out from North Dakota on an exploration expedition for the Snake River country. They camped near present-day Idaho Springs on July 8, 1839. In 1842, Josiah Gregg also explored the area; he reached the headwaters of the Slough Fork of the Clearwater River about where Blackfoot stands today on October 6th. He named it for himself and his band (the "black footers"). In 1845, John Cockerill arrived in what is now Blackfoot with twenty-five men as part of a fur trading expedition led by Captain James Fenton. The group traveled upriver to Walla Walla and then down to Puget Sound before returning home via Yakima Trail via Sitka Pass. This journey marked perhaps one of the most significant events in early American history because it demonstrated that Russia had already begun opening up new trade routes with Asia when Ulysses S. Grant became president four years later and began implementing policies which opened up those routes further....Cockerill's group also discovered two small lakes located northwest of present-day Blackfoot: White Hall Lake on September 15th and Cutler Lake on October 10th.....These discoveries are generally considered to have been make by him rather than by Hernando de la Vega or any other explorer."

Blackfoot is an unincorporated community in Clearwater County, Idaho, United States. Blackfoot was founded in 1887 by the U.S. Army as a station on the Soo Railroad. It served as a garrison until it was abandoned in 1922. The community has been inhabited by Native Americans since pre-historic times and its present-day name means "place of many buffalo" in the Athabaskan language. The first white people to live in Blackfoot were Mormon pioneers who arrived there in 1847 from Salt Lake City. They named their settlement after the black American bison that they saw grazing on the edge of what is now Blackfoot Valley. After several years of development, the Mormons left for unknown reasons in 1853 and Blackfoot remained uninhabited for another 50 years or so until white men began to arrive hereabouts and open up new lands around 1860s when gold Fever struck nearby towns like Boise and Nampa looking for new sources of revenue from miners prospecting for silver and gold seams under the earth's surface. In 1865, John Custer led his cavalry unit into battle against Sitting Bull's Sioux tribe at Little Bighorn near present day Aberdeen, Idaho; during this engagement, Custer's horse became entangled with a obstacle near modern day Blackfoot and was killed instantly; this event helped spur development of blacksmithing businesses within what is today known as town center while also inspiring settlers to explore claims along Snake River Canyon which lay beyond where later developed settlements would sit. In 1887, Major George Armstrong Clemens organized 5 Cavalrymen Squadron (Cavalry) out of Fort Riley Kansas Territory east of Topeka Kansas under command of Lieutenant Colonel James Haggerty and set out eastward over Bridger Pass through Hellgate Gulch crossing Clearwater River below today’s town center heading towards what is now Asotin County about 25 miles southwest thereof we reached Coffee Creek off road following creek bed discovered copper mines at 1 1/2 miles from mouth found other mines but no mills located them all except one mill which proved to be nothing more than a waterwheel used for crushing corn stalks called Grist Mill at present day Asotin County about 10 miles due west therefrom learning about these mines we called campground hereabout two weeks started building flour mills small gristmills using power from water wheels soon completed three flour mills one large combined grinding capacity 200 bushels per hour each early spring 1863 discovered oil well at site where current creek outlet enters stream Big Springs stopped production thereabout 1890 moved operations headquarters to fortIdaho built another mill larger than original building used oil wells turned natural gas into few products consumed by residents before abandonment circa 1915 abandoned village sites including Grist Mill property reverted back to Indian ownership
