In early history, Ammon was a thriving town. Today, it is a small farming community located in southeastern Idaho. The town is bordered by the Snake River to the south and east and Blackwater Creek to the north. It lies on the eastern edge of what is now Bears Ears National Monument. The first Europeans to visit Ammon were fur traders from Russia in 1805. They named the area "Ammon" after an ancient Egyptian god who had control over water resources. In 1814, Brigham Young led a group of Mormon missionaries to this area and founded Salt Lake City here. Ammon quickly became one of Utah's most important settlements. In 1868, when federal land sales began in western Utah, Ammon was among the towns designated for sale. The townspeople voted to remain independent and refused to sell their land to the government. In 1870, they again refused to sell when offered cash or property grants in exchange for their votes. This defiance ultimately led to their loss when Congress approved gift-wrapping legislation that gave federal lands near Utah’s cities and towns without popular vote (thus giving those areas away at public auction). Today, Ammon remains an agricultural center with some manufacturing operations performed within its limits; however, most businesses are confined within its five boroughs which encompass much of central Idaho's rural areas: Boise City proper (the administrative center), Coeur d'Alene Junction (the junction between I-5 and US 95), Eagle Butte (a mountain peak located about 10 miles southwest of Boise City), Nampa (population 811 as of 2000), Rexburg (population 593 as of 2000) and umpteen other smaller villages scattered throughout central Idaho foothills running along both banks of the Snake River Valley westward from Boise City rimming Rudy Gorge National Park on three sides—an area totaling over 2 million acres (.8 million hectares). Some residents also commute into larger metropolitan areas such as Boise or Twin Falls through Interstate 11 or Interstate 651

The history of Ammon, Idaho dates back to the late 1800s when it was a small community located in what is now central Idaho. At that time, the area was part of the Montana Territory and as such, no official records were kept of local events or citizens. However, oral historian John Briggs has shared memories from his childhood and other residents of Ammon about their early days. In 1908, the town was renamed after Major General James A. Garfield in recognition of his contributions to American military life. The town's first post office opened in 1912 and its first resident was Mrs. Della Haggerty. The population of Ammon peaked at around 100 people in 1920 but declined thereafter due to factors such as World War I and the Dust Bowl years which pushed many farmers out of the area. However, stories from localsmoVE that during World War II there were significant numbers of troops stationed in and around Ammon completing various tasks including training for Operation Overlord (the invasion of Normandy). It is also rumored that one version of the song "The Boys Are Back In Town" was written about Ammon during this time period. As time passed, several businesses sprouted up within town limits- notably a grocery store and a barbershop- while residents started hosting annual Harvest Festivals which drew many tourists to enjoy traditional activities like corn on the cob, piecing quilts or playing tag while enjoying local wines. Although these days most residents live outside town limits near Boise or Pocatello, aspects such as summer family entertainment programs (like carnival rides), Fourth Of July fireworks displays and special events are still held annually in memory of those who gave their lives for our country every day!
