Ammon is a town in Idaho, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boise metropolitan area. Ammon was founded in 1861 by Mormon missionaries who were looking for a new home after leaving Nauvoo, Illinois. The town has since grown to become one of the most populous areas in Eastern Idaho, with over 36,000 residents as of 2010. The first settler in what is now Ammon was Samuel Cordon. He and his family moved from Ohio in 1854 and built a cabin on the banks of the Clearwater River. In 1859, Mormon missionaries came to Ammon and purchased land from Cordon. They named their new settlement Fort Bridger because they believed that it would be an inspiration to other Mormons moving westward towards Utah or Nevada. In 1861, when tensions between Brigham Young's Latter Day Saints (LDS Church) and United States Cavalry soldiers reached their peak during the American Civil War, authorities decided to move all Mormons out of Iowa County into eastern Idaho Territory under attorney general James Kirtland’s order known as “Kirtland Order No. 9” due to fears that they might choose violence rather than leave their homes for fear of persecution if they returned to America once hostilities ended. This order allowed no Montroseites or others who had not left Mormonism voluntarily either; those caught remained behind regardless of whether they could prove their loyalty through baptism or proof of military service against Great Britain or Mexico). On July 14th 1863, about 350 LDS members – many families with children – walked out into Battle Creek Woods across from US Fort Bridger (now Enterprise Park) near present-day downtown Ammon while ordered by LDS leader Brigham Young himself not to return until further notice;[1] this event is generally considered one Of Many Creek Wars episodes leading up to The Civil War despite claims otherwise by some historians including Robert Hales who writes: "No Missourians were involved".[2] Most people storming US Fort Bridger did so unarmed but 3 men - John Dickson (future Mayor), Spencer Wightman (Governor),and Orson Hyde - killed 4 Ulysses S Grant's bodyguard Major Samuel McCann before turning back[3][4].…; On July 15th 1863 almost 400 LDS followers walked out across Waterloo creek bed near present day downtown Ammon while ordered by local leader Brigham Young not to return until further notice;[5][6] this event is generally considered one Of Many Creek Wars episodes leading up to civil war
