The ship arrived at Boise City Naval Shipyard on January 9, 1942 and was commissioned into the United States Navy on February 10. She served in the Pacific Theater of World War II as a aircraft carrier and escort vessel. On September 2, 1945 she decommissioned at San Diego and was sold to Argentina on October 5. Ammon is located at 34°18′N 117°27′W and has an elevation of 4,425 feet (1,561 metres). The name "Ammon" means "in the field". The first mention of Ammon was in 1805 when it was spelled Amson. At that time, there were no settlements in what is now Idaho and most residents lived on the Snake River watershed which included parts of Utah and Wyoming. In 1860, The Mormon pioneers founded Salt Lake City on the site of present-day Boise and began to populate what would become Ammon County with their families. Helping to develop this new community were local businessmen Hyrum Smith and Wm. Fenton who organized a wagon road from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Provo, UT through what are now Bullfrog Canyon and Northcliffe Creek before turning eastward along today's I-84 corridor to connect Salt Lake City with eastern Oregon and market goods at Fort Bridger on the Great Salt Lake. This route later became known as Main Street because it ran northeast from Council Bluffs down main street into downtown Boise before turning southwesterly onto Indianola Road before continuing northwest down Indianola Road to its current terminus at State Street in downtown Boise
