The United States Coast Guard was established on May 15, 1790. As the first national guard service in the United States, the Coast Guard played an important role in American history. In 1846, the Coast Guard was transferred from the Navy to become a separate Department of Justice agency. On September 3, 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt signed into law The National Defense Act which designated the Coast Guard as a military establishment with all powers and privileges of a regular army unit. The first Chief of Staff for the Coast Guard was Rear Admiral John J. Pershing who served from 1912-1915. One of our most famous members of the Coast Guard is Ulysses S. Grant who served as Commandant of Military Academy at West Point from 1885-1892 and then Secretary of War from 1893-1897. During World War II, many famous members of the Coast Guards were called to active duty including Admiler George Dewey and Commander William Halsey who led Task Force 58 during Operation Neptune’s Spear which destroyed Japan’s naval forces at Pearl Harbor. After World War II ended, many sailors and marines left to return home while others were hired by private companies such as ExxonMobil to help clean up after The Great Depression which affected marine life along America’s coasts especially in California where salt water intrusion caused extensive damage to coastal communities over several decades In 1970, Congress passed The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) which provided funding for coast guard activities through FY 1972 appropriations Acts until 1995 when NOAA became operational with its own appropriation Acts Since then there have been periodic requests for new funds or dedicated resources for shore security including: - 2014 request for $1 billion dollars for “ enhance homeland security through asset protection measures ” - 2016 request for $2 million dollars towards counterterrorism efforts - 2017 request for $500 thousand dollars towards improving weather forecasting capabilities

Ammon is a small town in Idaho. The population was 2,752 at the 2010 census. It is located in eastern Ammon County and includes the communities of Easton, Goodyear, Hudson, and Lyman. Ammon is named after an early settler, David Ammons. The first people to arrive in what is now Ammon County were the Shoshone Native Americans. They followed the Snake River until they reached present-day Utah where they crossed over into Oregon. After paths had been developed by fur trappers and travelers on their way through this area, local pioneers arrived beginning in 1847 to claim land for themselves as part of Cache Valley Ranching Company grants given out by President Brigham Young to Mormons who had settled there from Illinois. In 1862, east of Goodyear on state land granted by President Abraham Lincoln to Territorial Governor John Cushman—later renamed Boise—the community of Easton was founded as a Landing on the Boise River which became a thriving agricultural society with Uriah Heep (a Paiute) as its first postmaster and storekeeper/farmer handling mail and supplies for settlers coming down the river from Idaho Territory then called Deseret (the Mormon name for Salt Lake City). In 1867 Addison Sanger built one of North America's earliest steamboats at his millrace across the stream from Easton; she provided transportation between Easton and Boise City until her destruction by fire in 1889 while still being used as a floating hotel contemporary with some others along this stretch of river such as White Sands Resort south of Eagle Creek Ferry Landing today’s LewistonGate Shopping Center just upstream from Dry Gulch Dam completed in 1978.) The name Ammon is derived from the Hebrew word ammon, meaning "to consecrate." The community of Ammon was founded in 1868 by LDS missionaries, and it has since been a center for LDS missionary work. In 1916, Ammon became the first city in Idaho to be established as a town. In 1938, the city was renamed after president George A. Smith. The current mayor of Ammon is Rex E. Ream.
The first permanent settler in the area was D.C. Mason in 1887, who built a cabin on the east side of the Snake River. The first post office was established at Ammon in 1898, and the town name changed to Ammon in 1907. In 1920, it became an incorporated municipality.
