In 1959, the first small batch coffee shop opened in Honolulu. The shop was called the Hawaii Coffee Company and it made a small batch of coffee that was served at local cafes and restaurants. In 1984, the Hawaii Coffee Company became known as Kawa's Coffee. Kawa's Coffee continued to make small batches of coffee until 1997 when they closed their business. Between 1978 and 1997, there were only six small batch coffee shops in Honolulu. Today, there are over seventy-six smallbatch coffee shops in Honolulu alone!
