The history of the navy deployed gift is long and varied. Gifts from the navy have been a common sight on Oahu since World War II. From small items such as candy bars to larger gifts, the navy has always been there to support its troops and residents. During World War II, when the United States was fighting for survival against Nazi Germany, the navy sent many donations of goods and services. Items such as food, clothing, gasoline, medical supplies and more were given to different parts of Hawaii. Throughout the war years, USS West Virginia (LHD-1) became known as "the Navy's Christmas present" because it distributed nearly 1 million gifts to locals in Honolulu alone. After Pearl Harbor happened in 1941 and Japan bombed Pearl Harbor killing over 200 sailors and marines, USS Arizona (CA-8) arrived in Honolulu with a large shipment of goods including foodstuffs, tires, military hardware and more. The US military had started shipping goods into Honolulu specifically for local citizens that would be used by Hawaiian civilians in order to help keep them alive during wartime. Throughout 1946 - 1948 both USS Nevada (LPH-5) and USS Oregon (CA-10) made regular trips down from California delivering cargo totaling over 2 million pounds of supplies to various parts of Hawaii. The shipments included everything from lumber to canned fruit to toiletries! One particular event that stands out in naval gift history is Operation Tahiti which took place on December 7th 1944 after Japan attacked Rabaul on New Guinea without warning our Allies. Over 4200 American servicemen were lost during this attack so it is easy to understand why the navy donated so much material during this time period. Hawaii is a small, volcanic island located in the Pacific Ocean. The islands were first inhabited by Polynesians and later by the Hawaiians. In 1898, the United States acquired Hawaii from Japan as part of the Treaty of Paris following World War I. The island became an official U.S. territory on August 15, 1959.
