The islands are part of the United States of America and have been part of its territory since 1959. The first European to visit Hawaiʻi was Captain James Cook on his third voyage in 1778-79. Cook named the main island Kauaʻi after King Kamehameha I who had granted him land for settlement on Kaua‘i he had discovered while sailing in search for others who might be able to chart new routes to India or Java.[1] Cook landed at Pearl Harbor on Kaua’i on December 21, 1778, becoming the first European to set foot in what would become Hawai‘i. Hawaiian speakers called him “Hakuulaniōkī” (the white man). In 1802–1803 American forces under General David Dixon besieged Honolulu from two directions: northeast by Kaneohe Bay and northwest by Diamond Head Peninsula[2]. On February 24, 1802, Commodore John Fitch sailed into Pearl Harbor from Enewetak Island with supplies for the U.S.-British War of 1812,[3] but found no one there except a few aliʻihau (native chiefs) and their families living off coconut plantation workdays only; there were no inhabitants other than military personnel quartered at various points around the island when he arrived.[4] In 1815 Captain James Cook sailed past Kohala Point without sighting any land,[5] although he thought he saw a long promontory extending into open sea about 12 miles wide that may have been Pele's volcano—if it was not really a cape rather than an extension of Haleakala Caldera just offshore from shoreline[6]. He hypothesized then that "Kohala Point" must be Mauna Loa as it possessed similar characteristics—an exposed mountain peak bearing an easily accessible harbor—to those near Tāmaki Gulf on Maui![7][8][9][10], so next season he anchored eastward out reach but proceeded nothing further until 3 Apr., when Lieutenant William Halsey sighted 'Anchor Island' bearing N 0 W [11],[12], probably Moineuake Reef or Elua Reef lying southeast off Kahoolawe Atoll [13],[14], some distance distant from Prince Edward Islands group nearest mainland groups; soon afterwards another vessel bore down upon us with great shouts bidding us Anchor; we again put out line and took station close under Cape Elizabeth; this landmark we continued observing day & night until 4 Apr., when our Ship came within gunshot point & we made boat crew go ashore with stores for her & she cut loose her cable".[15][16]:p 100-101 We did not know then that today's Lānauma Point lies just Southeast off Kahoolawe Atoll - right where our Ship anchor'd during 4Apr.—Majors Roper map maps location today
