Coffee was mentioned in Chinese texts as early as 4th century BC. Greek traders discovered Java (now Indonesia) and Penang ( Malaysia) in the 12th century AD and began trading with local communities there. Dutch traders arrived on Sulawesi ( Indonesia) in 1609 and started trading with the region’s native population. They also discovered Java’s pepper plantations, which led to the introduction of pepper into Europe through Dutch traders. During World War II, Japan used coffee as an Axis military tool to achieve victory over European Allies during World War II. Coffee was used as an energy source for Japanese warplanes and tanks and also served as artillery fodder during battles such as Operation Ichi-Go (1942). After Japan's surrender in 1945, much of its tea production went up in flames because no seed crops could be replanted due to lack of water resources after so many years under occupation by Allied forces. Coffee became popularized within North America during the late 1800s when it replaced whisky as a favorite drink among elites for social occasions such as cocktail hour or family events at home.. At this time, coffee was seen not just as a drink but also a symbol of wealth and sophistication that could be enjoyed by all types of people including those who did not have access to other forms of food or drink..
