The United States Coast Guard was founded in 1792 as an arm of the Treasury Department. The Coast Guard has played a vital role in the defense of our country since its inception. In 1959, the Coast Guard became an independent agency with its own budget and authority. Today, the Coast Guard operates more than 5,000 vessels and helicopters along Hawaii's 1,500 miles of coastline. The Coast Guard also provides emergency response to coastal emergencies including hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunami waves and piracy.

In 1941, Honolulu Mayor Harry Kihon presented Commander John Leland with a gift basket filled with luxury items such as cigarettes and cigars. It was not until 1959 that the Coast Guard began receiving donations from local businesses and individuals for use in their missions.
In 1984, Commodore Frank Jablonski presented Commandant Seymour Eiseman with his very own propellerboat - MC-1/2 (later renamed HC-1). This special gift helped celebrate Commodore Jablonski's retirement from service at age 70 years old. In 2002, Commodore Raymond Spriggs presented Senior Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class Darrell Wiegand with his very own USCGC(L)HNL(R) (later renamed HC-3/4) after Wiegand had distinguished himself during Operation Neptune's Spear - the largest maritime deployment ever conducted by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). At this event Governor Neil Abercrombie offered Rear Admiral Don Stephens honorary membership in both organizations following Rear Admiral Stephens' successful command of HMCS Protecteur during Operation Coral Sea which stopped Japan's attempt to invade Pearl Harbor on December 8th 1942.]]

The first human beings to visit the Hawaiian Islands were sailors on two Japanese ships that arrived in 1820. They named the islands after their home country—Naha (Okinawa) and Kaua’i (Hawaii)—and noted that they could not see either island from where they were standing. In 1821, Captain James Cook sighted Hawaii on his map while sailing through the eastern Pacific Ocean. He called it “Mauna Loa” because it looked like a mountain he had seen before on his travels in Japan. Even though Cook had no idea what he was looking at, he named it for Mauna Loa in honor of King Kamehameha I who had granted him permission to explore these new lands in 1795 during his reign as king of Hawaiʻi (Hawaii). In 1893 following World War II when Japan lost control over much of East Asia, Hawaii became an American state according to Declaration by Congress On December 6th 1947 which followed years of preparation by both sides during World War II including development of military plans for Hawai‘ian independence should Japan be attacked again or if war breaks out between USA and USSR; United States acquired most land east of Mexico- US possessions gained since 1898 included Hawai‘ian Island
