The town of Woodstock, Georgia was founded in 1837 by two brothers, George and Amos Wright. The town was named after the nearby Mount Holyoke College, which had been established in 1802. The college was a land grant to Amos Wright and his brother George. In 1842, the Wrights bought 2,000 acres of land east of the city from the McIntosh family. They built a small log cabin and named it Woodstock. The Wrights sold the property to Jno. Pritchard in 1865. In 1870, James Sargent bought 1,200 acres of land south of Woodstock from the Wrights. He renamed it Pinecrest and built a house on what is now Elm Street. In 1888-89, John Hogg purchased 515 acres of land north of Woodstock from Sargent and renamed it Northwood. He added an additional 100 acres to this property in 1889-90 for $5 per acre ($160 total). This addition made Northwood into one of the largest agricultural holdings in northeast Georgia
