Woodstock, Georgia is a town in Mitchell County, Georgia, United States. The population was 582 at the 2010 census. Woodstock was founded in 1868 by General James G. Blount and his wife Anna Lee. It became a city in 1907. Woodstock is the seat of Mitchell County government and the location of the county courthouse. The first permanent settlers in what would become Mitchell County were Captain John Smith and his family who arrived from Savannah, Georgia on May 21, 1797 during the French and Indian War. They named their new land "New Ross," after Colonel George Ross of Savannah's regiment who had died fighting for independence that year. This early settler company included nine families: four men (John Smith, Ebenezer Cook, Samuel Rogers), three women (Anna Lee, Deborah Todd), one child (Hannah). Other early pioneers include Daniel Boone who settled near present day Dahlonega in 1814; Elijah Abel who built a mill on the river opposite where Woodstock now stands in 1821; Levi Coffin who established a blacksmith shop near present day Indianola; Isaac Newton whose house still stands on Church Street;and two Mr.'s (George Witherspoon and John Caulfield) from Cumberland County joining forces with Captain Smith to form an Erected Marker Company which platted what would become Mount Zion Cemetery on May 9th, 1799/1800 about eight miles east of New Ross Springs on footpath leading thence to Nantahala River Valley.* *In 1824 another group of Englishmen numbered seventy-six led by Major James Pritchard arrived at New Ross Springs from Fort Mackenzie outside present day Knoxville Tennessee.) Upon arriving they erected a large white cross on high ground southeast of today's town limits adjacent to White Sulphur Creek as part of their Pioneers' Festival celebration - marking this event as "the First Protestant Episcopal Missionary Arrival In South Carolina." When Spain acquired Florida via purchase from France it ceded all its North American possessions including Georgia except for Saint Petersburg* (*See "Georgia History" online article #8 dated October 15th 2010.) Accordingly Spanish military officer Don Carlos de Toledo y Ulloa founded San Miguel del Rio Grande de la Vega post west of Dahlonega on September 12th 1796 with sixty five soldiery under his command when he discoveredluaqui Indians living amongst Native Americans along Fishing Creek just west of Stono Ferry* [*It should be noted that Spanish exploration into this area began soon after Spain lost control over Florida.] Withdrawing Spanish forces several times during 1800s various groups seeking refuge among Seminole Nation people called themselves off Southern Alabama Rivers such as Flint Hills Creeks & Chattanoogas before finally finding temporaryts homesteads 10 miles due south at modern day Hiawasa Bayou just northeast of ChattanoogaGA& *On January 1st 1800 seven hundred Borden Loyalists numbering eightyfive actually set out from Thomson Station including six militiamen commanded by Major David Coffee] After exploring much interior country including what is now Muscogee National Forest they located means toe point terminus between Big Bend National Park straddling Arkansas River & Talladega Bayou southwest corner current Gainesville GA - making them original owners or claims to lands extending downriver & northeasterly beyond present day Decatur GA also claimed by Cherokee Nation prior to British acquisition.- * tree stump markers remaining at old fort site show this area was surveyed Feb 27/1794———————————————————————————– In February 1700Captain John Smith discoveredluaqui Indians living amongst Native Americans along Fishing Creek just west of Stono Ferry – naming this discovery “New Ross†after Colonel GeorgeRossof Savannah's regiment who had died fighting for independence that year.*Later that year Captain James Blount emigrated with his family to create what would become Woodstock Township while Lieutenant Governor Thomas Lanier organized Chambersburg Section 2 within western Mitchell County….From here development proceeded slowly while both men enjoyed friendly relationships with local Native tribes………………………………………..By 1868 General JamesGBlount had moved his headquarters herefrom nearby Macon following successful campaigns against Seminoles.– By 1907 general population reached 582………………………………………..Today Woodstock remains an important center for cultural diversity with many popular tourist attractions………………………………………..
The first white settlers in Woodstock were James and Elizabeth Robertson, who founded the town in 1817. The Robertson family was originally from Scotland. The town's name is derived from two of its founders: James (a woodcutter) and Elizabeth (née Shields). In 1830, the town became part of Alabama when that state was created from parts of Georgia and Alabama. In 1836, the United States Congress passed a bill annexing Woodstock to Georgia as part of the Compromise of 1836. This act made it illegal for any other person to own land within Georgia’s borders without giving consent from both states’ legislatures. During Reconstruction, Woodstock saw many changes. In 1865, black Americans began moving into the town after being disenfranchised in southern America during the Jim Crow era. By 1870, most residents were African American. The population peaked at around 30,000 in 1920 before declining rapidly over time due to various reasons such as poverty and crime rates among African Americans then compared to European-American residents. After World War II ended, many African American employees moved into white-owned businesses in nearby Athens while White flight increased throughout south Georgia due to job opportunities available elsewhere in the country following integration through court rulings regarding desegregation across racial lines. Black people continued living and working in Woodstock until its closure by law enforcement authorities on July 15, 1981 following days of riots between blacks and whites that followed a decision by then-Governor Michael Ramsey not to renew an agreement with federal housing officials for private development within what would become known as "The Black Blocks".
