Winder, Georgia is a town in Pickens County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–Marietta Metropolitan Statistical Area. Winder was founded in 1821 by Captain James Winder and his wife Nancy. The name was changed to Winder in 1851 after the death of Capt. Winder's father-in-law, Jonathan Bylls. The first post office opened in 1825 and closed in 1865. In 1903, it became a property of the University of Georgia and remained that way until it merged with Athens on January 1, 2001. The community had a small grocery store until 1939 when Farmer Wm Henson started operating what would later become known as "The Groom Shop". He operated this grocery for 47 years until his death in 1984. When he died, his widow operate the store for 17 more years before selling it to JB Ingram from Athens on January 1, 2001 In 2002-2003 (the early 2000s), there were several wildfires throughout Pickens County which destroyed many homes and businesses including: "The Groom Shop", "Pine Top Farms", "Winder Woolen Mill" (which reopened two weeks later), "New Beginnings Lutheran Church" (which also reopened), and "Fish Camp Rd." Most of these businesses closed because they were built around open flames or within feet of an open flame at one point or another during those fires; however, most reopened soon afterwards without any damage done to their property. What followed was a time where people who lived near either open flames or businesses that were damaged by them started having second thoughts about living near such places as winders got used to seeing regular wildfires across their community but nothing major happened since then things have slowly been improving

In 1870, the first post office in Winder opened. The town's population reached 2,000 people by 1880. By 1912, Winder had become a city with a total population of over 30,000 people.
