Winder, Georgia is a small town in the Appalachian Mountains of central Georgia. The population was 1,611 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Athens–Clarke County,Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Winder was George Washington Winder in 1820. He and his family established a cabin on a hill overlooking the town. Winder served as an early school teacher and postmaster before becoming an attorney and judge. He also founded what is now known as the Winder Savings Bank in 1875. In 1886, Samuel Tilden purchased land northwest of Winder from George Witherspoon for $5 per acre. Tilden had moved to Georgia from Tennessee after serving as general manager of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. He built a home near downtown called "Tilden's Hill". Winder, Georgia (population: 4,527) is a small town in McIntosh County, Georgia. It was established on December 17, 1814 by brothers John and James Winder. The original name of the community was "Winder's Ferry." The first post office was established in 1817 and the first store was built in 1819. Winder had two churches until they both burned down in 1868. The railroad came to town in 1870 making it easier to get around. In 1893, the windmill that still stands today was built and named after Wm. C. Winder who donated it to the community. The windmill has been used for power ever since. The economy of Winder is based mostly on agriculture with some manufacturing being done as well such as sheetmetal work and farming tools. There are also a few businesses which have sprung up over time such as a convenience store, restaurant, hotel and an auto shop/repair shop which closed down in 1998 but reopened in 2009 under the new name of "Winder Auto Parts." In 2006, there were 4 schools within 5 miles of Winder; one elementary school (elementary school), middle school (middle school), high school (high school) and one special needs program (special needs). These schools offer various programs including math/science fiction/theology electives etc., along with English Language Arts classes for students with disabilities
Winder was founded in 1815 by George Winder, a planter and slaveholder. The town grew rapidly, and by 1830 it had a population of over 100 people. By 1860, Winder had become the most important cotton plantation town in Georgia. It remained an important center of cotton production until the late 1800s, when machine manufacturing took over.
