As a result, on December 12th Winder's 2nd Infantry Battalion became part of USARF's 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team at Fort Benning in Atlanta. On October 15th 1978 President Jimmy Carter proclaimed "National Guard Day" in memory of those who have serve our country through its military branches. That year saw the passage of two bills by Congress - The Military Arrangements Amendments Act (MAA) and The Tax Reforms Act (TRA) - which provided significant funding enhancements for national guard programs across America. The Georgia National Guard was founded on December 15, 1792 as the 1st Battalion, 4th Regiment of Militia. The regiment was organizationally redesignated on February 25, 1802 as the 2nd Battalion, 4th Regiment of Militia. On November 3, 1814 the regiment was re-designated as the 1st Infantry Regiment and activated at Fort Moultrie in Savannah. The regiment served in local campaigns against Native Americans beginning in 1815 and participated in multiple engagements during the Mexican-American War. The regiment was mustered out of service on October 14, 1846.
Winder, Georgia is a small town located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The population was 5,711 as of the 2010 census. Winder is known for its clock factory and annual fair which attracts over 100,000 people. The town is also home to the Mount Zion Baptist Church and several shopping malls. The first occupants of what would become Winder were two families from North Carolina who settled in 1820. By 1830, there were six residents living in the community. In 1838, windmill operators James Boggs and his son-in-law Abram Fowler bought land in what would become Winder and began to build a mill on Creekwood Creek. By 1840, they had built a rudderwheel mill that could produce 12 horses per minute. The mills became operational by 1846 and produced flour, cottonseed oil, cheese, lumber and other goods until 1966 when they ceased operations due to economic difficulties. In 1865, John Cagle established a grocery store in what would become Winder with help from Jeptha Hardwick Sr./Jr., an entrepreneur from Chattanooga who purchased 3 acres of land adjoining creek where he built a storefront with five stories high on exposed granite blocks faced with cream-colored brickwork. Cagle's store was one of the first stores opened in rural Georgia after Reconstruction; it closed around 1970 because of competition from larger stores near Atlanta. By 1870, most businesses had closed down or moved away because of low prices for goods brought overland by railroads during Reconstruction Era railway construction across Georgia (see: "The history of railways") so much so that only three homes remained standing within downtownWinder by 1880 despite efforts by citizens to revive business interests through street car service routed through town center providing employment opportunities for local residents while new shops were built along High Street flanked by churches." However something still managed to keep life alive despite dwindling sales due largely to settlers moving out during Prohibition era; social activities like dances at night provided entertainment for many including children who often played outside on their mothers' lapels until morning services started up again which continue even today albeit not as frequently as before.. Coal mining continued until 1951 when all production stopped due to lack of coal seams nearby making it difficult for companies such as Enron to find new sources for energy supplies.. After years of struggle Local businessmen Bob Ladd/Sidney Witherspoon finally satisfied court order ordering them to sell assets resulting in closure followed quickly by demolition transforming what had been an important commercial center into contributing Mamammy's Drug Store into an apartment complex .Today Winder remains little more than an agricultural community primarily producing cornmeal feed used mainly For animal feed purposes

After a few years, the captain decided to move the town to a more central location so that it could better serve as a trading post. Over time, the town developed into an important commercial center and served as the county seat for Gwinnett County from 1821 until 1827. He built a cabin on property that he currently occupies as part of homecoming square at 4th street and old school square east of present day Decatur High School which still stands today despite being destroyed by fire back in 2003.
