Winder, Georgia is a town in Coffee County, Georgia, United States. The population was 568 at the 2010 census. Winder is part of the Athens-Clarke metropolitan area. The first settlers in Winder were Duncan and Aileen MacDonald who arrived in 1807. The MacDonalds erected a log cabin on the present site of Winder on December 8, 1807. They were the first Europeans to live in what is now Coffee County. In 1811, John Robertson founded Robertson's Store in what is now Winder and it became the county seat of Coffee County. In 1821, James Fenton established a ferry terminal at Point Lookout on the Chattahoochee River which served as an important transportation link between Atlanta and Chattanooga. In 1865, Confederate General Joseph Easley surrendered at Appomattox Court House after a three-month siege of Petersburg Peninsula. Union General Ulysses S. Grant took possession of Petersburg and renamed it Fort Henry after Admiral Harry Tilton (the brother of US Senator Charles Sumner). In 1865, Jno Haggerty organized cotton farmers from Baldwin County into two groups – one to purchase land near Decatur and another near Rome—and began developing what would become Winder as their new home base for cotton production. Winder, Georgia is a small town in northeast Georgia on the Alabama state line. The population was 1,859 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Muscogee County, Georgia local government. The town was founded in 1802 by John Winder and his wife Eliza (née Wise). John had come to the area from Scotland and built a cabin near what is now Winder. The first post office was established in 1806. In 1828, Winder became a county seat. Winder’s Creek flows through the town and forms its eastern border. Some of the earliest evidence for windmills appears to be around this time; one example features an early windmillstone found at nearby Cross Keys Park. By 1840, there were over 20 windmills located in Winder Township. As cotton production increased throughout the south during the mid-19th century, so too did mill ownership within Winder Township; by 1860, 60% of all turbines owned in Muscogee County were located within Turner Township alone! In 1865, after Alabama seceded from the Union, General Sherman burned all remaining Confederate stores in Atlanta and destroyed most infrastructure including mills along with otherSupporting businesses such as banks and churches! This event helped spur development within Muscogee County as various new industries sprang up to take advantage of abandoned infrastructure! In 1880 – just before he died – John Winder donated land to build what would become known as “John Winder Elementary School” on current day West Main Street in downtown Winder! His donation allowed for school construction which began in 1881 and continued until 1954 when it closed due to budget cuts; however today portions of that building still serve as home offices for many local businesses!
Winder was founded in 1817 by Captain John Winder and his family. It became an early cotton plantations in the area and prospered until the Civil War. After the war, it regained its prosperity as a slave-based plantation society, but ended with its abolition in 1865. The town developed rapidly during Reconstruction period after its reclamation by the government as a free state, and peaked in population around 1920. However, it has declined since then and currently ranking at #206 on the list of lowest-ranked U.S. cities according to The Daily Review's 2018 city rankings
