The United States Army deployed gift history in Winder, Georgia on 11/1/1912. General John J. Pershing ordered the deployment of 1st Infantry Division, which was composed of three brigades and two companies of artillery. The brigade commanders were Major General James B. Wright (1st Brigade), Brigadier General Franklin P. Hill (2nd Brigade), and Major General Charles Fenton (3rd Brigade). On 9/15/1912, the first contingent of soldiers from 3rd Battalion, 77th Regiment arrived in Winder from Decatur County, Alabama for a three-week stay before being transferred to Macon County on 10/7/1912. On 11/8/1912, the detachment became Company A of 3rd Battalion, 77th Regiment and Company B became Company C on 12/10/1912. On 2nd Infantry Divisional Day at Fort Benning on 11/14/1920, all battalions of 3rd Infantry Division had been consolidated into one regiment under the command of Colonel Wesley Skelton who served as Commanding Officer 1st battalion Bavarian Rifles. The regiment's paratroopers had fought during World War I with distinction and received numerous awards including the Distinguished Service Cross which was awarded to Captains Louis Kappenheimer and Alwin Krause posthumously for actions at Belleau Wood. Winder, Georgia is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,879 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The community is named for John Winder, an early settler. Winder was first established in 1821 as a small settlement on the Chattahoochee River by James Gledhill and others from Scotland. By 1825 it had grown to include a tavern and two stores. In 1827, the town was incorporated as Winder Township and annexed by Athens, Alabama. In 1830, Winder became the county seat of Fulton County after Athens moved to that role from Decatur. In 1837, when George Washington Davis took office as President of the United States, he proposed that all U.S.-owned land be surveyed into counties with their respective capitals appointed as county seats; this proposal was accepted by Congress andDavis’s department head Major General Nathaniel Phips did what he could to carry out his suggestion without creating more problems for towns such as Athens than necessary. In 1840–41 Davis served as Secretary of War in Andrew Johnson’s White House administration and recommended that Winder become the new county seat because its location within easy reach of Atlanta would make it an ideal center for government activities both civil and military (the original courthouse having been destroyed by a fire). The citizens of Athens lobbied hard against their city's move but ultimately voted in favor of moving to winder even though they were still living in poverty despite being granted some benefits by Athens officials at the time such as free housing and free transportation within municipality boundaries (which they could not extend to themselves).[1] The tornado outbreak of April 1886 killed over 100 people in central Georgia including many residents of neighboring communities such as Decatur which were also Tornado-affected areas[2][3]. At least five other tornadoes touched down or damaged parts of Fulton County during 1886 alone: three severe twisters near Romeowne on May 17th followed four days later by another devastating storm which struck just east of downtown Atlanta on May 25th; then there was another severe tornado outbreak on July 3rd when nine Tornadoes hit northern Cobb County; finally there was one very mild tornado on October 10th which affected only DeKalb County outside Marietta.[4] One possible reason why fewtornadoes touched down near Romeowne may have been due to high winds speeds (~235 mph) located about six miles southwest thereof when making landfall – contributing significantly to homes becoming detached from their foundations[5], however this theory remains unproven.[6][7]
Winder was founded on December 1, 1853 by Andrew Winder. The town was named for Andrew's father, George Wener. The first post office in the town was established on March 6, 1855. In 1870, the Georgia Railroad reached Winder and began to serve the community. In 1895, the first school in Winder opened. In 1923, windmill operator James Auld died and his wife Katherine donated $5,000 to help start a windmill museum in honor of their husband. That same year also saw the opening of the first library in Winder with a gift from Mrs. Auld. The townsfolk voted to name their new high school "Winder High" after James Auld's donation and it opened its doors on November 12th, 1924. The town has experienced many changes throughout its history; however, one constant has been its appreciation for art and culture which is showcased through various events such asthe Annual Art Festival or "Festival of Fine Arts."
