Winder, Georgia was founded in 1814. It is located in the Chattahoochee River valley and became an important center for cotton production during the antebellum period. The town was named for John Winder, a settler who purchased land in 1811. In 1817, Winder erected a log cabin as a depot on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. The first post office opened inWINDER on November 15, 1817. By 1830, Winder had become a thriving community with several stores and three churches. A school was established in1830 and continued to operate until 1947.During the Civil War, Winder sided with the Confederacy and lost its city status but retains its name today as part of rural Fulton County. After the war, winder experienced rapid growth as people migrated to the area from other parts of Georgia and Tennessee. In 1870, winder had 11 merchants, nine churches and five schools.
