Waycross is a small town located in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 1,831 at the 2000 census. Waycross is one of the oldest towns in Fulton County and has been settled since 1819. The first permanent settler in Waycross was James Cook, who arrived in 1819 from England. Cook named his community after himself, Waycross on the Chattahoochee River. In 1853, Waycross was incorporated as a village. In 1865, it became part of the newly created city of Atlanta. In 1898, Atlanta annexed Waycross and itslying villages to form a new city called Atlantia. Atlantia was renamed WayCross after the town's incorporation intoAtlanta and then again after Atlantia's merger with other cities to form metropolitan Atlanta in 1998. The original brick courthouse building still stands today in downtown Waycross and is used as Municipal Courtroom #1 for all municipal court hearings throughout the greater Atlanta area including Fulton County and portions of DeKalb County as well as Cobb County Georgia Waycross also maintains two excellent libraries - The First Baptist Church Library which opened in 1899 and The Methodist Episcopal Church Library which opened in 1909 The Wayne county Courthouse also houses many important government offices such as gavels for sessions of the county court, Probate & family law clerk services- Superior Court Judgeships along with many other judicial functions including Traffic Division - Juvenile Justice Department Jail
