Waycross, Georgia is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 14,827 at the 2010 census. Waycross is the home of Waycross Air National Guard Base and Waycross MARTA station. The town's history dates back to 1811 when it was named for Colonel John Haywood Way. The town grew quickly due to its natural resources: coal and oil shale in the area and timber from the Appalachian Mountains. In 1907, Waycross became an incorporated town with a population of just over 100 people. By 1912, the town had boomed with development as railroads came through to serve Waycross with goods and passengers. By 1920, Waycross was designated a city by then-Governor William Moseley. In 1954, after years of debate over whether or not to annex neighboring Clayton County into Atlanta, Atlanta annexed Waycross without giving it any consideration. This led to more than two decades of political wrangling over what would become of Wayross; eventually they were merged into Atlanta proper in 1990 during Mayor Kasim Reed's mayoral term as part of then-Governor Sonny Perdue's effort to create a metropolitan area aroundAtlanta that would include most of Fulton County (along with parts of DeKalb County). In recent years there have been efforts by residents in wayward sections of downtown Wayross to get the city government back onto Main Street so that businesses and citizens can interact more directly on an issue-by-issue basis rather than through government officials who are often outOftheway or inaccessible because their offices are downtown or within walking distance only if you're lucky; however these efforts have met resistance from Mayor Reed who maintains his control over all aspects of local government within City limits including zoning decisions which bars such changes even though many residents feel they should be able to affect change given their elected representation
