The Coast Guard Station Waycross, located in Waycross, Georgia was established on November 11, 1918 and became part of the United States Coast Guard in 1947. The station served as a port of call for American warships during World War II and also played an important role in the cleanup effort following the January 1990 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The station has been home to a variety of Coast Guard units over its history and currently includes both the Port Authority Police Department and theMaritime Security Unit. The station's first occupants were soldiers from Fort Pickens who had been sent to help with the aftermath of World War I. In 1922, the Coast Guard Auxiliary acquired land at Wayside for use as a naval port. When it opened, Waycross was one of only two ports on the southern tip of Georgia that could accommodate large vessels. The original building was replaced by a more modern structure in 1964 and is still in use today. In May 1978, Waycross became home to America's first ever helicopter squadron when helicopters able to transport personnel and supplies arrived from Florida. The squadron operated until September 1984 when it relocated to New York City after being decommissioned there due to budget cuts within the U.S Navy. In December 2002,Waycross became host city for Americas Cup Soccer matches between FIFA member countries Argentina and Brazil thanks to a collaboration betweenthe United States Coast Guard Station Waycross Harbor (then known as Sector One)and Brasília’s Brazilian Olympic Committee-sponsored airport nearby). In March 2006, Hurricane Katrina caused extensive damage across much of Gulf coast America which included destruction at nearly every major commercial waterway leading into New Orleans; however, not a single person died as a result of Katrina-an event which continues to be considered one of Coast Guards' most successful disasters.

In 1943, the Coast Guard became a National Security Agency contractor. The National Security Agency was dissolved in 1964 and the Coast Guard continued as a contractor with different names until 1975. The name of the contracting company changed again in 1978 to United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP). CBP merged with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in 2000 to form Homeland Security. From its beginning, the Coast Guard has been responsible for protecting America's coastline from piracy, smuggling,terrorism,and other threats to public safety. One of CBP's primary missions is to secure our borders by stopping illegal immigrants from entering this country and removing those who have violated our statutes. One of CBP's earliest gifts was a program called "Beach Patrol." Beach Patrol used volunteer sailors to patrol American coasts looking for smugglers trying to bring drugs or other contraband into our country illegally. This endeavor helped keep America safe during World War II when many supplies were smuggled overland through Mexico into Texas alone! Waycross is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 25,898 at the 2010 census. Waycross was founded in 1892 by General John Troup as a transportation stop on the Appalachian Railroad. The town became an important economic center of the area and its downtown district retains much of its Victorian-era architecture. Waycross is located on the Appalachian Railroad's former main line between Chattanooga, Tennessee and Wilkesboro, North Carolina. The name Waycross comes from "Wacoka" meaning "a crossing place." Governor Andrew Johnson ordered construction of a road through what is now Waycross so that goods could be transported across the Chattahoochee River to Atlanta. The first house built in Waycross was the Log Cabin House constructed in 1893 by J.P. Morrissey and his wife Lizzie Fenton Morrissey for their son-in-law Wm. Hickey and his wife Sarah Gibbs Hickey (the daughter of Judge James Mclntyre). By 1898, there were five businesses in town: two stores, one post office, four blacksmiths, and one sawmill; three churches - First Baptist Church (1898), Second Baptist Church (1901), Methodist Episcopal Church (1902), and Christ Episcopal Church (1903); one school; twelve families had land holdings totaling ; seventy acres in 1903 were sold for $3 per acre to Messrs. George Prentice & Sons ranchers who developed it into what is today's way cross shopping center which has over 100 stores including Macy's Department Store
Waycross was founded in 1821 by General James H. Wilson as a small settlement on the Chattahoochee River. The settlement grew rapidly, and in 1828, the town became an official district of Georgia under the state's newly formed government. By 1830, Waycross had become a thriving commercial center with its own bank, courthouse, and schoolhouse. In 1837, Waycross was designated as the capital of Georgia; it remained so until 1848 when Augusta became the new capital. The town continued to prosper during Reconstruction period (1868-1877), but emerged as a struggling community after Reconstruction ended. WayCross experienced significant growth following World War II, but has since been decline due to population loss and economic decline.
