The Army was founded in 1775 in Georgia. Waycross, Georgia is the home of the 126th Infantry Regiment, which has been serving in the U.S. Army since World War II. The regiment is part of the 9th Infantry Division and was activated on October 25, 1942. On December 7, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and America entered World War II. The 126th Infantry Regiment fought in North Africa and Italy before being deployed to Normandy as part of Operation Market Garden on September 1-3 1944. After liberation from Nazi Germany, the regiment sailed to England where they participated in Operation Overlord on July 6-9 1945. In 1946, the regiment was redesignated as the 126th Infantry Brigade and served until it disbanded on May 1st, 1947 at Fort Polk Louisiana. During its history with the United States Army, Waycross has hosted numerous events including 5K races for troops stationed at nearby Camp Gordon (1940-1945), a 15K race for Marines stationed at Marine Corps Base Parris Island (1964), a 50K race for soldiers stationed at Fort Stewart (1979), a 10K race for service members stationed at Fort Benning (1982), an 8K race for troops stationed at Macon Air Force Base (1984), a 2M run/walk for children aged 12 months old or younger held annually during fall Break season here at Waycross Regional Airport (1985) and more recently...the annual Founder's Day March celebration initiated by Waycross Mayor Vernon Hargrave back in 1990

The first American military forces in Waycross were a company of infantry under the command of Captain John S. Smith. The town was founded on December 21, 1825 by General James Knox Polk and his army as a base for operations against Spanish interests in Georgia. On October 10, 1861, Confederate soldiers surprised the Union Army at Fort Sumter and began to retreat towards Savannah. Lieutenant Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest led a force of Confederate cavalry into the town and burned down many stores before withdrawing back out to join Confederate General Braxton Bragg's army near478 miles northwest of Atlanta. In 1865, Waycross was attacked by Union troops commanded by Major General Ulysses S. Grant during the Battle of Newtonia Creek. A major part of Grant's forces was supported by artillery from Waycross while much of the rest came from nearby Augusta and Brunswick Counties. The town surrendered with only about sixty men remaining when it was discovered that most had already run away or been killed or captured.

The town motto is "United We Stand".During World War II Waycross became an important air base for the Allies because it had two runways: 5/23 and 4/29. In 1944, Wayross was renamed Fort Gordon after US General Casey's headquarters during World War II. As part of the Marshall Plan, Fort Gordon housed displaced Polish citizens who had been expelled from their homes in Germany following Adolf Hitler's rise to power in 1933. After the war, Fort Gordon became a United Nations base with many civilian control over its activities until it was closed in 1995.
