Warner Robins is a city in east Georgia, United States. It was founded on November 3, 1837, by James J. Warner and his brothers as the town of Milledgeville. The area that now makes up the city was first settled by Cherokee people who were forced out of their homes due to land speculation and violence from white settlers. In 1881, the town passed through an act of Congress which granted it municipal status. The city's history can be traced back to 1837 when James J. Warner and his brothers set aside some land in what is now eastern Georgia for growth. They named their new town Milledgeville after a cotton plantations they had recently acquired near Mobile, Alabama. The company moved into its first buildings in 1840 and soon began developing the area around it with mills, churches, schools, and other infrastructure projects that helped make Warner Robins one of the most prosperous cities in south Georgia at the time. The city's success continued until the American Civil War caused many businesses to close or be taken over by rival companies. In 1865, following Reconstruction efforts led by President Abraham Lincoln, Atlanta became an inaugural capital of the Confederate States of America under General Robert Ewell ( afterward known as Battle Creek ). Although much damage had been done toAtlanta during wartime occupation (eighty-four percent of all destroyed structures were within two blocks of Centerville), Mayor John Sutherlin successfully negotiated work permits for reconstruction workers so that many storefronts were rebuilt despite little financial help from government coffers.
