Warner Robins was founded in 1885 by the merger of two small towns, Warner and Robbins. The city became very large and prospering, with a population of over 100,000 in 1925. It has since lost some of its prominence but remains a popular tourist destination. The area now known as Warner Robins was originally part of what is now Cobb County. When the first Europeans arrived in Georgia, they were looking for a new place to settle and found an undiscovered valley called “The Valley” that would be perfect for their purposes. They named the area after one of their own, John Warner, who had come to Georgia from England as a trader and land speculator. In 1793, when James Oglethorpe moved his colony toGeorgia he gave this valley to John Warner as part of his gift for helping him carry out his mission to establish the Colony. In 1835, Joseph Epps patented what is now downtown Atlanta along with all of Cobb County land east thereof including parts of today’s Athens-Clarke County and DeKalb County. This patent granted Epps exclusive rights to sell goods on the Chattahoochee River until 1848 which led to many early businesses getting started in Atlanta including: Pemberton’s General Store (opened on December 15th 1830), Stone & Webster (1831), Waddell & Powers (1833), Harper Brothers paper mills (1836-1912) – among many others! By 1850 Atlanta had become one of America’s leading commercial cities with over 1 million residents! Although much has changed since then – most notably during the American Civil War – there are still many reminders that have helped make Atlanta such an important center for commerce and culture!
