The Marine Corps has a long and proud history of service to the United States. The corps is made up of approximately 34,000 men and women who deploy to serve in various assignments around the world. There are many unique Marines that serve their country with distinction, but there are also some talented individuals who demonstrate strong leadership skills. One such individual is Lance Corporal Joshua Roberts, who was deployed as a gift for Marines stationed in Iraq. Lance Corporal Roberts was killed in action on November 12th, 2004 when his unit came under attack from insurgents. His death left a gaping hole in the Marine Corps and his sacrifice helpedto keep America safe during that time of unrest. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism. Villa Rica is a small community located in the middle of Macon County, Georgia. The population was 513 as of the 2010 census. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson and his army commandeered this village for their winter encampment. Villa Rica was originally named "Hendersonville." Some say that General Jackson's staff recommended that the name be changed to Villa Rica after purchasing land near Hendersonville, Tennessee. The first settler in Villa Rica was James Whitehead who arrived in 1819. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street. Other early settlers included John Townsend, Jonathan Cobb and George Troup. The first store in Villa Rica was operated by Wm. Collyer from 1829 to 1830. Jno French erected a log courthouse in 1830 which served as the village's court house until it burned down in 1865. In 1840, Augustus Burch purchased 1,000 acres of land at present-day Main Street and Elm Avenue for $10 per acre ($160 total). This property became known as Burch Farms after him. The town square was laid out around this same time and contains many historical landmarks such as the original schoolhouse and cemetery which are still used today (though not lived inside anymore). Burch donated some of his farm land to the Village for development into open space which eventually became Park Square today. In 1865, Villa Rica had a population of just over 100 people when Confederate forces invaded Georgia during the Civil War; all but four residents were killed or captured within 24 hours of hostilities starting.) After Reconstruction ended following the war, Villa Rica slowly regained its status quo until World War II when it experienced an influx of refugees from newly acquired lands in central Africa due to famine caused by Tropical Storm Hermine (which wrecked much agricultural production throughout southern United States). As more people arrived seeking opportunity, villarica essentially reverted back to an agricultural community with few new businesses opening up because there were no available resources elsewhere for them to commute into town so they could work.—Today there are only a few hundred residents living on Vine Street while most businesses have closed down or moved away because they can't compete with larger towns nearby.–Overall life has been relatively unchanged since before World War II; however some current infrastructure improvements such as public transportation have occurred recently including getting fiber optic internet service through Chattanooga’s Metro Ethernet network
