Villa Rica is a small town in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,451 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The settlement name may derive from Spanish "villa" meaning estate or mansion and "rica" meaning swamp or bog. Villa Rica first appears on public landchartered by the Cherokee Nation in 1786 as part of their efforts to purchase land east of the Chattahoochee River for resettlement purposes. The town site was surveyed in 1820 by Jesse Jameson and sold to John Gadsden for $1,000 cash. Gadsden renamed it Villa Rica after his plantation in Jamaica where he had been born and raised. In 1824, General Andrew Jackson took office as President of the United States and began an effort to remove all Native Americans from central Georgia (including Villa Rica). This included destroying most of what remained of the Cherokee Nation's holdings in eastern Alabama and southeastern Georgia following his victory over that nation during the War for Independence. In retaliation for this measure, Jealous destroyed much Cherokee property north of Augusta including Villa Rica; however, no one was killed as a result due to friendly relations between those two nations at that time. When Jackson assumed office again in 1829, he determined that all Indian tribes living east of the Mississippi River should be removed under Ulysses S. Grant's orders because they were considered hostile enemies of America proper - an order which could not be broken without military force. So when Jackson arrived in Villa Rica on July 3rd., 1830 with 4500 men surrounding it on three sides with artillery positioned across both approaches leading into town from Highwood Creek – well aware that even if any shots were fired within its walls there would be mass casualties among civilians – he ordered all citizens inside to take shelter behind walls until further notice while his army burned down everything within sight outside: homes, churches and stores looted during previous Indians' raids into adjacent villages had also been set ablaze! The resulting firestorm killed more than 20 people native to Villa Rica who were caught inside buildings burning alive while their families watched through windows; many more died later when soldiers returned with cannons intent on avenging their fallen kinfolk inside these blazing structures...the total death toll from this event stands today at nearly 100%. In 1840s new owner (Martha Washington) changed course & started cultivating cotton instead but left few residents & few amenities behind… Main Street still leads you straight up a long dirt drive thru brushy woods past 2 white frame houses before coming out onto a small open field just past another house onto US Hwy 1 about 5 miles west-northwest of downtown GA

The Villa Rica Plantation was founded in 1792 by Captain James McGillivray and his wife, Sally. The plantation became one of the most important in Georgia. It was known for its cotton production and other crops. The couple had four children: James McGillivray, Jr., (1793-1872), John McGillivray, Sr. (1795-1864), and Martha McGillivray (1800-1875). In 1839, the family sold their land to General Nathan Bedford Forrest. Villa Rica was a cavalry commander during the American Civil War and is best known for leading a group of Confederate raiders into central Georgia in 1864. After the war, Villa Rica resumed his plantations until his death in 1881. In 1865, General Forrest leased part of Villa Rica's property to Colonel Asa Gray for development as a town called Augusta. However, little progress was made until after World War II when the town became Villa Rica again after being renamed by General Motors as Pontiac Georgia. Augusta today is home to many reminders of its past including an old plantation house where President Harry S Truman resided during World War II and where he met with Winston Churchill on July 8th, 1945 during the war's end declaration ceremony at Fulton County Courthouse plaza
Villa Rica, Georgia was founded in 1733 by Captain James Robertson and his wife. It served as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River for several years before becoming a town in 1748. In 1801, it became the capital of what is now Alabama. Villa Rica was destroyed by fire in 1889, but was rebuilt and renamed after its founder.
